Well I never heard anything super bad about them except Crushers saying that the mines never had any problems with the H55 and this new tranny gives them problems here and there.

Well that sucks. Maybe its time for a big ass body lift :hillbilly: Seriously though, those r trannys seemed to work well in the V6 mini trucks, and I think it's basically the same transmission used in the 4 liter HO jeep inline 6's, which isn't that far off in power compared to your diesel. Millions out on the road and they seem to hold out reasonably well.

Yeah, not too worried, I know it's not a bad transmission, just no H55, even calling the parts guy at Ens industrial today and at first when I mentioned I wanted to put the H55 into it, his first comments were oh the H55 is a great tranny. :meh: He did agree it would be a bitch to get it to fit, and I just don't want it to be some kind of redneck hack show just to get it to fit.

Looks like my spare 1HZ is comming with an H55, might need to up my price now.:hillbilly:

What does it not clear, the tank, or just wrong shape tranny tunnel/hump? Not wanting the hz/h55 for one of your other projects? Wonder if my dad would be insterested in the 5spd for their 80 :hhmm:.

Two things, the big one is the cross member is about 1 foot back of where the H55 needs it, and I can't move it forward unless I do some funky welding on the frame because the arms for the front suspension mount there. initially was thinking of a beefed up cross member supporting forward a foot in the middle, but I would have to drop and chop up the existing cross member because the H55 drops down below the frame in that location.

Second the tranny shifter comes out a half a foot forward of the hole in the floor, so would have to chop that up too. I would chop away if I was just building it for wheeling and didn't care, but I want it to look somewhat factory, so this is the way it's got to be. after starting to clean the tranny its starting to look pretty good, and it shifted real good when I parked it, no slop, only drove in low range it's whole life, so might be pretty good shape.

I don't know about seperating my 1HZ from my 5 speed it might make it easier to sell as one unit, unless someone just wants the HZ now before I get around to cleaning it up and posting it up for sale in the classifieds.

Ah. That makes sense. Wouldn't be so bad to make a decent cover for the relocated shifter hole, but the x-member and mount would be tougher to do cleanly. Maybe integrated into a belly pan so it didn't look too goofy?

I'll think about the combo and let you know. My 40s 2F is not the right long term choice, I see that now. Thought I had it figured out with 3b/13bt, but going 1hz could be an option. Just that its really not the best time for me to be getting into all that right now. Gonna be really busy soon.

Let me know, I don't mind holding it for a while, might need to put it into one of my brothers spare barns/cabins on his farm, to make some room in my shop, I think with a bit of love that 1HZ will clean up real nice, as I am seeing with the R151 tranny.

Thanks Deny. Your probably right about the 1hz. Don't know if it's the right choice, but I think I'll pass on this and stick with my original idea of eventually swapping in a 3B/13BT, just seems a better fit to a vintage 40. I think a complete 1hz/h55 combo will be valuable to someone, not so many of them available .

The 1HZ in a forty would be pretty kick ass, but it definately doesn't have the tractor feel like the old 3B and 13BT would have:hillbilly:

Here are a few pictures from the weekend, some engine install pics and then pulled out the original cross member, threw some paint on it, then started cleaning the tranny, what a bitch, but it is turning out pretty nice.

Didn't get too much done this weekend, cause I put old blue to work, after I did an oil change, checked fluids and such. Saved me a ton of wheel burrow loads of leaves into the back alley, but man trying to manuver that little trailer into those trees with no power steering was a lot of manual labour ;)

looks good

Did a few things on my truck, thanks to Adam helping me pull the engine, then Chris stoping by with slide hammer after I blew up the pilot bearing using the grease and bolt trick. Note the pilot bearing is different for H55F and the R tranny, so good thing I decided to get new clutch and bearings, even the clutch was pretty thin compared to the new one. Almost finished cleaning the R tranny, just need to get the snapped clutch slave bolts off and should be ready for bolt up and put back into the truck again.

Did a few things, trannys almost ready to bolt back up and drop drivetrain back in.

Installed tranny with help of buddy Adam. also did a few other things like tap all the holes in the frame that filled up with paint. Good fun, always some little things to do. Now have a list of a few small things that I need to buy and finish up so I can install drivetrain back into the frame.

It would be a very very slow thread. I may start something in the future here when I get fenders and start stripping the body

Haven't done much all summer, due to work, ball, barbeques and drinking. But stuffed a few hours in this weekend between work and getting my wagon ready for a long road trip. got the block heater in and finally managed to pry the damn oil pan off so I can start making a oil drain plug for the turbo. I don't know what kind of silicone Greg and Sheldon used, but the black goo was almost impossible to pull the pan off, think I bent it in a few places which I will have to hammer strait again before putting back together. Hopefully work will slow and I will get some time to wrench on this thing again. Still got 3 weeks holiday left this year, so might use a bit of it to just stay at home and wrench.

Hopefully there is no next time as I hope to button it up once i get that drain welded in and drive it forever! :hillbilly:
