Hey, I thought I would post some pictures of my rack I made out of MDO plywood. I had a sheet laying around and I wanted to have a rack for hunting. I ordered some load bars from Gamiviti - freshly grated parmesan for your Land Cruiser and went to work.

WEIRD!! :hhmm: Yet well done, at a glance you'd never know!

I guess it serves its purpose. Temporary though right? And was it marine ply?

Watch out for termites!

Sweet rack, looks real nice. I have considered a wood rack because my steel skills are lacking and my wood experience is fair. MDO is a great choice.

Looks nice. You may want to consider putting a stripper pole up there.

Temporary was what I had in mind when I was building it, but it is pretty darn stout, and really light weight. MDO is an exterior plywood so it should last for a few years considering I only have it on during hunting season.

nice rack, hey wait, last time I said that was to my wife,:hillbilly:
Looks good, works well, why change it,

Functional, original, personalized... I'm impressed. Slap on an ARB sticker on it or write INTI on somewhere and you'll have "expo" people crawling all over you... but I kind of wish you would have stained and varnished it... kept that natural look.

As a fairly opinionated person, I find it hard to believe, but I really don't know what to think of this. I'm at a loss. :meh:

Wood is no stranger to the automobile.

The first 'cars', were wooden carriages with motors

Ford made the Woodie

Old Chev trucks had wooden trays, as did some others

An old military offroad truck called a matador made by AEC had a wooden cabin

It was pretty much the light weight alternative before aluminium came along.

Why? Because he didn't spend $1200 on this rack? The man made it himself with his ingenuity and got away with the best he could. The rack is strong as he says so if it works for him then why are you giving him grief?

How much do you have invested into this? I like it.

That is cool and smart...I hope it holds up but you saved yourself lots of dough and it looks good

I built one out of an aluminum ATV ramp and some 1/2" flatbar. In total, it cost me $62. I am using the stock roof rack and U-bolts and have not had any problems, just don't load a ton of weight up there. I left the mounting tabs on just in case I want to still use it as a ramp again but I admit, they look sort of dumb. ;)

Nice rack. Looks great!

As I am better prepared to work with wood (MDF) than metal it looks like an interesting project.

Did you use both the Gamiviti gutter towers and cross bars?

Did you order the 45 degree towers? Could you measure for me the distance between the top of the roof and the bottom of your rack please?

Thanks,
Richard
