I know Shawn and Steve H. both recently built some pergolas out of timbers, logs, etc. What is a good source for reasonably priced timber/lumber? I need to make repairs to my balcony/porch and thought about adding on an additional covered porch to the end of it while I'm 'in there' and have stucco off. I'm thinking about making the additional porch out of exposed square cut timbers and T&G decking.

I was wondering the same thing, but I'm in Denver. Not sure the same source would apply, but subscribed anyway.

Groff Lumber on 4th Street. Not sure about cost, but they carry timbers.

a contractor buddy said, Lowe's/Home Depot. they basically set the prices and everyone else matches. if it's special order, the lumber yards may have it in stock and you can get it there.

I hadn't looked. I just assumed Lowes/Home Depot were only good for dimensional lumber and not timbers/beams. I'm still in the process of figuring out the extent of the water damage so a little way off from making a decision on the extra porch area.

Is this where you got the lumber for your pergola?

Maybe their interior stuff is OK but I bought a bunch pressure treated outdoor stuff from Lowe's to make a carport at the old house and it warpred terribly once it dried out.

If you're looking for rough sawn, I would find a guy with his own mill. There's a guy at the south end of Bernalillo, there are a few guys up towards Taos, then a few by Reserve. Groff has high end wood, but their prices make owning a landcruiser seem cheap. Good luck

yes, but mine was regular dimension stuff. I got the treated wood like Greg mentioned, but mine has not warped and when the green color faded, it looks like stained wood now. I am happy with it.

for round and large timber, that's the ordered stuff I mentioned that would be better to find and at a specialty yard. that where Lowe's/Depot are getting theirs when you special order it (I know because when I asked for a price they pulled out a paper with the name and # of a place in town I recognized and called them for a price).

I called around and NM Timber was the only place that had them in stock. Everywhere else needed "a couple of days" and they were 10% to 15% more. Kind of obvious...

I've used both Groff on 4th and N.M. Timber and Viga in the past. Before Lumber Inc. became Stock Materials, they had a bandsaw mill onsite where they'd do beams and corbels. Might check with Stock. I've also gotten stuff off the Chilili Land Grant, but through friends. Each has a little different inventory. Freshly milled lumber that hasn't been kiln dried, and green, treated lumber have super high moisture contents and often warp and twist when they dry if not used right away. These things need to be ordered and delivered right as you need them. You risk them turning into propellers if they sit around unconstrained over time. Vigas and latillas will check as they dry. It's just what wood does.

Common' Mark,

Think outside the "square" box. Shawn and Steve just put something up. I drive by there a couple times a week. It should not be hard to take down. :grinpimp:

On a serious note, have you checked any of those places on 2nd street, or 4th, not sure witch one to see if they have anything.

Haven't seriously checked into any wood yet. I'm still working on figuring out the full scope of the repairs to the existing structure. I'll hopefully have enough time this weekend to get all the stucco off and get a better sense of exactly what's damaged and whether I should repair it or tear it all down and start over.
