won't stay in 4 low

I'm asking this question for a friend. His 60 will drive in 4-low as long as someone holds the shifter in place. Otherwise it pops back out. Can anyone tell me what the common causes of this are for an fj60?

Could be something as simple as a stiff shifter boot (the one underneath the vehicle). That can be fixed with a pocket knife. Do a search; this was recently discussed.

Super easy fix.... Just did it my self. There is a spring that needs to be replaced. DO you have an FSM?
Search this was just covered and it is very easy to fix

Search "detent spring" and you should find your answere
There are 2 on the tcase
You can replace the spring or shim it with small washers
I used 2 small washers on each spring and it stiffened the shifting up considerably

Also check the motor mounts - if not sound, they could put enough torque to pop the Xfer out of 4lo.

I did a body lift and have this same problem, so if your friend did a body lift he needs to pull the boot off the shifter and trim the clamp that holds it down, but its probably the spring that everyone else mentioned.
