It just won't engage. Any ideas?

When was the last time you had it in 4L?

If it has been some time, the linkage from lack of use can sometimes be somewhat "frozen". Start lubricating the hell out of it.

You could also pull on it while standing outside from the pass door opening. More leverage.

I'm assuming you've gone underneath to visually inspect the linkage. So nothing is bent, etc.

The lever moves all the way over but won't catch.

Check the linkage pin, I Once had one fall out do the same thing...
