Need some help.... looking at the wireing diagram there should be four wires going/coming from the starter... One straight from the battery, one to ground, one to the ignition coil and one to the amp gauge. Need some help id'ing which is which.

The battery is obvious...

Where does the ground mount? I do not see it in this picture.

The one without a wire to it...I was assuming this was the one to the amp gauge but I do not see the other end anywhere.

The wiring digram also only shows two wires to the coil. Any idea what this wire coming from the carb is?

Appriciate ay help you guys can iding the correct ones....thanks!

Wire on the carb is for the idle solenoid. It needs a switched 12V for the idle circuit to be open and provide fuel for the engine to idle.

Your ammeter wire is not in that picture.

The small green lead is for the ballast resistor by pass to the coil. This provides 12V to the coil at startup only.

The multiple spliced wire is the solenoid signal wire from the ignition switch. When you turn the key to the start position, it gets 12V from the key and closes the solenoid, engaging the starter motor.

Ok...so its the idle solenoid...k...now I cannot find that on the wiring diagram...is it supposed to be hooked to the coil? If not...where? Thanks for the reply!

Well-

It is very possible that a previous owner has created all sorts of custom modifications to your electrical system, so it is not too far off base to find things cobbled and cut up.

The easiest source for a switched 12V under the hood would be the positive side of the coil.

If I remember correctly, there was a bullet-style connector in the wiring harness that came out of the firewall by the carburetor. Who knows what has been cut up under the dash, so perhaps that is why it went to the coil.

Speaking of the coil, I do not see a ballast resistor. I would look at that coil and see if you can tell if it is internally resisted or externally. It may say something to that effect on the outside of it. I would also remove the distributor cap and inspect your points to make sure they are not burnt up and waiting to leave you sitting on the side of the road.

I don't see a ground either in your photo. Your ground will mount to the frame very nearby.

Thats what I thought....where on the starter should the ground connect? On my last cruiser I remember it being toward the rear I think? Anyone have a picture? this is an OCT 71 BTW. Thanks for all teh replys...

The lower mounting bolt of the starter motor secured the ground strap.

In that same thread there's also a good photo of a starter ground strap, down farther than the diagram

Would the lack of ground from the starter keep the truck from starting or would it just make it likely to short out?

Hooking up the carb idle fuel solenoid to the coil is a bad idea. The ignition wire isn't fused, so having an extra device on it is just another opportunity for a short circuit that would make the ignition less reliable. It is supposed to get key on power from the key side of the voltage regulator.

strap

"Would the lack of ground from the starter keep the truck from starting or would it just make it likely to short out?"

The strap gives everything on the engine a path to ground so it can operate since the motor is isolated on rubber mounts

it may be possible you still have a ground through the metal parts of the mount but the strap makes sure

without a strap you would be more likely to have an open circuit than a short----a short is when voltage finds a unintended path to ground

Post some pics of the connections at the Batt and the alternator.
and some pics of the carb, then the guys here will tell you what goes where and if you are missing anything.

When the PO installed the gear reduction starter on my '40, they omitted the ground strap.

The symptoms were:
battery not charging
Intermittent starting issues - turn the ignition to start, and not even a 'click'. Other times, it would start right up like nothing was wrong. Drove me batty until I tracked it down.
