Island45:

Also, what size/brand are those tires on your 45? Man, they look "proper", and I mean that in a good way.

I should have thought to look in the 45 forum, thanks.

Now my curiosity is piqued! What's the story (sorry if I open old wounds!) on your old '67? That "before" pic is hilarious, how long did it sit under a mossy tree?

I decided to turn my 78 into a FJK30 tubed the rear, dually corp 14 ff, Dana 60 front chopped 4.5", had a gm turbo 350 to a 78 fj 40 transfer case switched that to a 205, 35 "tires to 42" tires disc brakes front and rear,2 20 gal fuell cells are what is done so far, ordered drivelines and seats yesterday. Still need to plumb brakes, Tranny coolant fan and radiator, fuell cells, exaust and gauges all the time consuming simple things.

here is a couple pics of it now

Brider, 33 x 9.50 x15. Sat about 12 years maybe. It really was just moss, no rust thru. Paid 750. from original owner... I'll try to send a link. no idea if it will work. edit.... it didn't. And I think we're off this thread.... we could revive the late thursday one, it has an interesting twist near the end...

Hi All:

So, last weekend I completed the last few things on the rear spring swap project. Re-located the bump stops and lower shock mounts.

Over the previous weeks I've been messing around with rear shackle lengths - the six inch shackles were not long enough - they would fold-up against the frame when driving. I fabbed-up some 7.5 inch shackles and they seem to work fine.

Some pics of the shackles:

Alan

Here's my list for my 71 FJ.

Go through the rear axle replace bearings, seals and swap out differentials.

Install new front bumper.

Continue replacing seals and gaskets on the mighty F.

Find a armstrong steering box that doesn't leak and swap out the leaky one.

If I can come up with the cash rebuild the transfer case rear out put is loose, and if I can come up with more cash rebuild the transmission since I'll pull it with the transfer.

Here's the list for my 87 SA 4Runner

Repair the cracks in my front frame rails.

Alan,
with your shocks mounted in front...are you still going off the rear of the upper mounts?

looking good :)
any pics of entire truck w/those 60 springs?
also, what springs are you running in front?

have you thought about adding a shackle-brace?
a buddy added his...welded only on one side:

Hi All:

Manny, 'yep using the stock upper (rear) shock mounts - seems fine.

No photos yet, but let me see what I can find . . . .

So, what is the idea behind the "shackle-brace?"

Regards,

Alan

So I new here but my winter (Almost Spring) project is to learn enough about 40's to start wrenching compitantly.

Adding a brace should reduce unwanted flex.
maybe reduce over-torquing the spring-bushings...

can anyone else think of benefits when running a brace?

Hi All:

Oh Manny, I *want* flex! All is wanted! :grinpimp:

Alan

....gas tank is 17 gals and I am getting approx 9-10 MPG with the Q-Jet.

Hoping for 14-15MPG for 1.5x the cruising range.

 here's to hoping. ;)

Quadra-Toilet :grinpimp:...........................Got one of those too:doh:

Hi All:

Some folks wanted to see photos of the whole rig after the longer spring install. A convenient construction site offered a spot to twist up the springs a little and take some pics.

Alan

Winter projects for the 40

Swap in FJ60 rear axle and figure out how to outboard the rear shocks at the same time. Based on my wheel backspacing it looks possible.

Finish the hydro assist steering. So far I have the spare box tapped. When I took it apart I didn't expect all those ball bearings to go everywhere. Hopefully I got it all together correctly. I have the ram and a cooler, all I need is lines and to mount the ram. I got lazy and back burnered this though.

Planning on skinning in the cage over the driver compartment too, but.....

Winter project was to convert my Cruiser a bit back to basics.
When i did the resto in 1989 i decided to use different tail lights.
After all the years they are no longer available and i couldnt stand the look any longer. ;) Yeah it did look like a diamond plate box on wheels.....
a-rear-old.jpg

Some years ago i found a brandnew Nissan Tire carrier that i kept for later use.
Pathfinder_006.jpg

Just like that one but never used.
First i reasembled my OEM tail lights and repaired the light guards, what luck i never throw anything away. :)

rack-closed.jpg

A 5mm steelplate holds the modified hinges and connects them with the bodywork......dont worry its sturdy enough in my case.
rear-hinge-1.jpg

I lowered the upper hinge so the soft top buttons are still easy to reach.

rack-left.jpg

Another steelplate on the left but thats for optical reasons to be honest. The round cateyes are from Hella, they were a cheap ebay find.;)

Opened 95° that thing does even have a pin at the hinge.
rack-open.jpg

There are about 80mm space between the rack and the body.
rack-right.jpg

....space for a shovel, a hi lift or other gimmicks.

rear-closed-low.jpg

Still love to do some work on my rig after 31 years. ;)
Oh well.....even changed the front diff over to a 4.11 today...we germans usually had 3.7s in there.....rear got changed earlier when i broke the pinion

Just rearend pics.....sorry.... front and side looks like this. ;)
