I am getting the windshield replaced in the wife's 62 on Friday, and I was curious about the gasket.

On 80s, the gasket is glued to the glass and the windshield frame. Is this true on the 60/62s too?

Can someone provide me with images of the windshield installation in the FSM?

Thanks,
Dave

I think this is different than the 80 series, but I don't know...

Yes the 80 windshield is easy. The 60 windshield is a real PITA. You can order new gaskets with or without the chrome strip. It is basically a pressure fit gasket in the windshield frame. I would not have one done by one of the speedy glass places that gobs silicon all over the place. Safelite is the one I was thinking of that you should avoid. They slop sealant on everything and it actually eats away the rubber gasket over time.

The guy I'm using has done my 80 a couple times and I like his attention to detail. That is the advantage to taking your vehicle to the shop, you get the owner doing your glass.

I had Safelite do mine just a few months ago. They did an excellent job. I think it depends on the shop.

They managed to save my old Gasket, so I didn't have to pay $100 for a new one.

Im installing that GM welting strip to replace the chrome pressure strip.

Mine is on insurance and they are allowing for an OEM gasket. I'll have to wait a couple more days for it to come in.

I think using a new OEM gasket is key to a replacement job if it's an original one.
When my buddy the glass man replaced mine on my 60 he struggled with the old gasket and wound up plunging his elbow into my perfect dash (speaker area):whoops:

Ouch

So tree got the glass and the glass man got the dash, sounds like you just got the shaft. :bang: LOL Doc:)

All I can tell you is that that chrome molding was engineered by Beelzebub himself. I went black, and like the looks better anyway, plus it's flexible, won't dent, and dammit, I just did it that way.

For years I told 60 owners that I couldn't get the gasket that accepts the chrome lock strip. Sure, they were available, but I couldn't bring myself to order one. The black, self-locking one is way better than the chrome-accepting one with a black lock strip.

The Precision aftermarket gasket is OK. OEM is probably better, but is not available in the self-locking. Get a PPG windshield installed at a shop by someone with lots of years of rubber gasket experience. They're getting harder to find all the time.
