Hi,

I cracked my windshield and had it replaced. I have brought it back THREE times because it makes too much wind noise. The shop says they do not hear it, but I have driven these cars for 16 years and KNOW it doesn't sound right.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should tell them, or what they might be doing wrong?

THANKS!!!

Do you know how they secured the metal trim that attaches to the a-pillar? From the factory it's fastened with aluminum rivets with a plastic cap. Those, in addition to the rubber trim strip that covers the rivet heads, do a good job keeping wind and water out of the a-pillar.

If that trim isn't securely fastened or a few holes were skipped, you'll get some noise. When the PO had my windshield replaced, they used wood screws (of various sizes) to secure the trim and skipped 1 hole on both pillars.

The other obvious possibility is that the glass isn't sealed around the entire perimeter. Good luck getting it all figured out.

this link may help... Couldn't take it any longer, it was time to take a look under my windshield trim

I just went to the shop, and they finally can hear what I am talking about. The noise is up near the mirror. I also thought the overall windshield was loud. When I went and looked at my car I noticed:

1. There was NO trim at all on the sides. I assume this is completely unacceptable?
2. It looked like there were neither rivets or screws holding it in...is this possible? could they have just glued it in????

I didn't take a picture because I with the owner and I like him and didn't want to be a d*ck. I will get pictures when I get the car back.

I am about to just say screw it and go to the Lexus dealer and have it done right with the right materials, but that would be rough on the budget, paying twice.

Thoughts, comments, ideas?

THANKS!!!!!

Sounds like you know the guy who put the glass in, maybe take them the FSM so they can see how it should be installed? If they simply glued in the metal trim to the a-pillar, then the job wasn't done right.

Well, the guy that owns the shop has a "glass guy" that comes and does it. I gave them the FSM, they didn't seem to give my argument much credence...

Insurance job, or are you paying out of pocket? If insurance job, threaten to get your agent involved...

Most Dealers just call in independent contractor to install windshields.

Some Safe Lite shops are pretty good with these installs. But you must specify OEM plastic coated rivets into factory holes, R&R all rust, plug any drilled holes not factory and new side moldings. You'll need to watch them as they do the job. So many drill new holes and put in screws, this is not acceptable as open (old) holes will be hidden from view. They also nick the paint which must be coated, so watch closely as they remove.

Reason they drill holes, is they don't get molding lined up properly with factory holes. The reason for this is they attach top by pulling of tape covering adhesive and stick down first. This is wrong procedure.

Correct procedure is to: Bent back one corner of tape covering adhesive and fold, to make a pull tab. Place all rivets in holes of molding onto A pillar, but do not set them yet. This put molding in proper position. Then pull back tape and press down on adhesive to tack down. Then go back and set rivets and cover with OEM strip of rubber molding cover.

Hope that made senses.:)
