never quite saw this before...i have a book from Shane...thanks again ;) It shows quite a few fj40's with what looks to be a plastic guard over the windshield hinge?

They are all for rigs from Germany...for our German brothern ...why was this so? a specific law that made it necesary to have these?

Most likely a mod for Euro safety standards. I recall seeing an export Vette a while back that had some small changes made for Europe....special mirrors, added side marker lights, and slight add-on wheel well flares. All from the factory. Was told at the time they were required to provide 'safety' to pedestrians and bicyclists. You wouldn't want to impale some guy on your winshield hinges, would you?
Even true for the US...our requirements are different than other countries...manufactrer just complies.
Ever notice that the seat belt bolts in a 40 are SAE and not metric....DOT standard. Drove me crazy for a while when I was replacing the roll-bar....one of the captive nuts is SAE on each base...the one for the seat belts. All the others are metric.

Also noticed that the pics look like the leading edge of the 'drip-rails' has some type of protection on them...probably for the same reasons...sharp edges??
