Winding Winch Rope on the Drum

You are winding it under tension, yes?

How much tension? Maybe you need more. I think it was suggested 1K lbs. of tension when wrapping synthetic line on an empty drum.

I will try it again tonight. I'm on level ground using the brakes to provide tension. So, it's a little hard to tell how much is enough. Also, I think part of the problem is the width of the opening in the fairlead is not wide enough. This is preventing the line from wrapping all the way to the ends of the spool. I will compare the opening width between the AL and roller fairleads for synthetic and steel.

Which fairlead is it? Some of them do look really narrow.

Not sure on the fairlead. Non-branded $25 type. I will look into something better. I want to get black anodized anyways.

I tried again tonight. I used the snatch block and hooked it to the 4R in the garage and pulled out most of the line which needed re-winding after using the winch this weekend. I was heavy on the brakes and literally dragged the 4R out of the garage while winding in the line. I got a pretty good wrap and lots of tension did help. I do think a new wider fairlead is needed.

Some fairleads are too narrow. I put a nice open mouth on ours to help with access, winding, and them being able to accept tube thimbles.

Manufacturer spec on Amsteel Blue is 5% of Average Break Strength for winding the line. Dragging a vehicle is probably more than that.

Seriously? I had no idea that was the case with synthetic lines. Seems like that would be quite a hassle while out on the trail.

Manufacturer spec is 5% ABS if I recall correctly.

I use my body weight and friction against the fairlead and put nice closely packed wraps on and have had little trouble. Your mileage might vary.
