I finally broke down and bought a winch - many thanks to those who've extricated me in the past...
The cable didn't have a hook. So, I checked Home Depot. Basic solution - since a winch capacity is much more than a typical application by size of cable, I didn't trust the little cable clamps. So, I went to Desert Rat. They had nothing, except the information that Clark Equipment Co.:
Clark Truck Equipment Inc.
is the "red letter dealer" in NM, meaning they could work on the winches. So, I went over there. They directed me to Wisco:
Wisco Supply, Inc.
who put a loop on the end of my cable for $15. When I was walking out, they told me they would sell me, and hook up (with my hardware except the clamps), a new 150 foot cable for my 8274 winch, for $75. They use a 500 ton press for the ends... Sounds like a good deal.
