I am thinking about putting a winch on my truck and I have a couple of questions.

I am considering an arrangement to have a hitch receiver in the front - so I could attach the winch fore and aft if I wanted to. I would also not have to carry the winch and a bull bar full time - reducing weight (so increasing gas milage) - and making the truck easier to park etc.

Question:

What size winch do I need for light recovery work? I would be pulling my truck (or someone else's truck) if it was stuck in mud or snow. I would like to keep the size and weight of the winch down so that I can attach and carry it easily.

What does a winch and bull bar combination weigh if I were to attach it to the front?

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeb

I think the concensus will be that you need an M12000. Part of me would argue that you could go with a faster 8274-50 and a snatch block though. In any event, a winch rated to pull at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle is the general rule, if memory serves. I have an XD9000 on my 80, pulls fine but I think the control box is cheap/ill-conceived (same as on an 8274-50) and that there needs to be more room between the cable and the cross bars. The cable needs to be wound about perfectly in order that it not bind up. I'm the type who winds my cable perfectly once a day, at the end of the day. Or I was anyway.

I'm not a fan of reveiver hitches for mounting a winch, but that's just my little crusade.

Receiver mounts limit you to a 8k winch...maybe 9...but the hitch isn't rated that high....plus, you are center pulling, and ANY side pull can twist the mount and do damage. Additionally, you'll find that 99.9999% of your winch needs are forward....if they aren't, it's easy enuf to snake the cable under the rig for a short rear tug.

Not sure what the 100 weighs, but personally I like a winch that's 2x the rig weight, tho 1.5 IS the rule. That one rare severe stuck will make you appreciate it. 12k minimum, and definitely get a snatch block and associated recovery gear.

Now, the dumb question, if the rig weighs 6500# and you add 250# for a winch and bar, how much mileage loss do you really expect? IMO, you'll never notice.

I have the 9500HS for a couple of years and it’s been working all right. I like the high speed when I don't need the hard pull. Come to think about it, I have never used the snatch block and my truck is very heavy. All the time. The winch is a pain on the front suspension, especially on high speed wooptidoo's but for what I do with the truck, I would not leave home without it.

The receiver mount will solve the handling problem but you’ll need a hell of a wiring to make the winch run as it should in the back. Also, I ran into a situation that I had to use it in a hurry and I don't know what I would have done if it was stuffed in the back somewhere. The integrity of the receiver mount on side pulls is also a concern.

Just my experience.

I have a 9500 on my truck. For rocks and the kind of stuff that we do, it is enough. Mud and snow is different. Then you need a 12k one. I would mount it in a bumper and also add new torsion bars. The stock front suspension can not handle the extra weight.

Receiver mount winches are a pain and you need to secure it in the vehicle when not in use. So that means somewhere you need to bolt it down since straps won't keep it in place in a roll-over.
