When I installed my winch, I stretched the synthetic line per the Warn instructions by pulling myself up a slight incline to a tree. I used it for the first time a couple weeks ago and this morning I pulled the line out to clean it off.

My question is how much tension do you need when you are respooling the line? I tied it to two spare tires and dragged the tires up my gravel driveway. Is that enough? Or, is that even necessary? It would be a lot easier to just walk the line out and spool it back holding the line by hand. I my mind, if you spool it too loose on the drum, it could bind itself when you use it pulling hard.

I always respool my cable under load. I wear leather gloves and pull/put tension on the cable as i feed it back in, ensuring it never crosses or crimps any other strands of cable. Keeps it working well for me for over 20 years.

Thanks. So the “load” is just you pull by hand against the winch, right?
