I realize the 80 is 6-lug and the 100 is 5. Besides this will a locked 80 rear basically swap under a 100? Yes I know gear ratios need to be the same as the front. Or could a guy yank the guts from the FZJ axle and swap them into the 100's? Albeit, notching the housing for the e-locker. I am looking at 100's and have a locked FZJ80 axle sitting here is why I ask. Be nice to have a FF rear too.

Major bitch to replace the exhaust manifolds? Seems cracked exhaust manifolds are common. Looking at one Cruiser with a cracked manifold. Doug Thorley system (headers & cat back) looks like it runs about $1250, that is what I would install if I had to change the manifolds out. .

Cost to fix the sunroof? Seems like a fair amount of them are busted.

Rear coils the same for 100 and 80's? Or basically the same? I ask again because I have lifted 80 coils sitting here.

Expected mileage out of the rack & pinion steering? I had an 04 Tacoma and changed the R&P at about 120k. So should I expect 100k out of the 100 R&P? Seems the 100 R&P is pretty damn expensive....

Had v8 60's and a v8 80 and am looking at getting into a 100 for a DD. Not new to Cruisers or trucks but new to 100s.

Cheers

It may be less work to go with ARB for your rear locker solution.

Which rear coils do you have? OME 863s and 864s work fine.

I am pretty sure my original R&P had 298k on it, but it had been leaking for a good while. The difference in mileage you'll see on that part is the amount of wheeling you'll be doing. It will wear out faster if you are wheeling your vehicle. The R&P can be had for about $530 reman from Toyota.

I think the 80 and 100 series axles are pretty similar. Most of the mounting points are the same.
The diff lock and coils are exactly the same. But I don't know if the gear ratio's are similar.

Mounting is basically the same for 80 vs 100 axle, I'm not sure if all the brackets are in the exact same position. The 80 rear FF is not as wide wheel mount to wheel mount as a 100 series rear though, which would probably be your biggest problem with that idea.

The 100 rear is a 9.5" ring gear (larger than the 80's) so you would be downsizing the diff.
That plus the narrow width and 5 v 6 lug I think you would be better served just swapping in an ARB or find a complete assembly from a 100.

80 series rear axles are 9.5" ring gears too...

The rear of an 80 is also 9.5 but the later models come in a full float model.

You are correct, Slee tricked me.. Slee Off-Road 100 Series Newbie Guide
"Rear differential was changed to a 9.5" ring gear."

I would still think it cheaper/easier to swap in a 5-lug assembly or ARB. There may be a spline count issue with swapping the 80 center into the 100 but don't quote me on that.

Diffs will swap (same rough diameter ring gear) but the 80 uses different axle splines than the 100 (30 vs 32). Back before Nitro was building 100 rear specific gears, you used to run 4x/5x/6x/7x/8x gears on a 4x/5x/6x/7x/8x ARB and buy the ARB side gears from the 100 Series locker to get your 32 splines. OR, you could buy a 80 Series e-locker, swap side gears and run it that way too. While the gears are the same rough OD (referred to as a 9.5") the pinion offset/ring flange was different between the two and thus diffs are not completely interchangeable.

Other differences, bolt dims on the control arms, brake lines, width (WMS) and of course the lug patter which could be adapted and get you the correct width. As for actual UCA/LCA/panhard mounts... I've never measured the two but as the 100 is a tad wider, I can only assume the suspension points widened up a tad too?
