i recently caught the FJ bug :bounce:and purchased my first FJ. it is a 1982 2f, SOA OME springs with 35s. i found a 78 with v8,SUA and 33S.that i like and bought it also . i want to put the 82 OME springs on the 78.i noticed that when ordering a lift that the part numbers are different . Will the gods of the FJ world enlighten me.

The "Eyes" of the springs are a different size.

You can order the correct bushings and use the springs.

I don't remember the measurement numbers off the top of my head but you will use your FJ 40 Bolts for the ID and the big eyes (same OD as an FJ60 bushings) as the OD.

I can't see your pics - just a little square with a red X in them

I think the 82 springs are wider. They won't fit period. Too wide for the hangers. :grinpimp:Ned

Here's his pics.

Tip: sometimes when pictures don't come in, right click the box and choose show picture or open in another window. If that doesn't work, click copy image address and repost in the message box and preview it or repost it properly as I just did.

PS: the third image box was a dead link

Apparently a lot of people DO fit the later springs (35mm spring-eyes) to the earlier cruisers having 25mm (or 1 inch) spring-eyes.

A disadvantage of doing so is that you will no longer have 24 identical suspension bushes. (You'll need only 8 of the old 25mm bushes and the other 16 will be 35mm OD.)

There is (from my experience a slight difference - 1 or 2 mm) in the spring width at the eyes which needs to be taken into account during assembly. (Or corrected.)

And a 35mm OD bush can't fit through the hole in the fixed-pin mount so it will be a PITA to fit those late-model springs to your 78 anyway.

---- At the fixed-pins, you have to fit both bushes into the spring and then try and squash that assembly into the "fixed pin mount" before bushing the pin through. Needless to say - This is not how Toyota intended the job to be done and it is difficult to accomplish easily. If you sand off too much of the bush end-faces to make the job easier - then I would anticipate vehicle handling problems (wandering) would result.

But having said all this - Many people DO fit the later model springs to an earlier model cruiser. In fact, as I understand it, ARB themselves did/do sell the 35mm-eye springs as being suitable for BOTH "pre-79" and "79&later" models.

Here is a widthe of the spring. Measure your perches.

Top is from a 1974 FJ40 Spring.

Middle is from a 1982 Spring.

Bottom is them side by side.

(Yes I do have a big pile of springs to select from. :hillbilly:)

Hmmm. :hhmm:

That wasn't my experience - but perhaps OME spring widths are different from Toyota spring widths.

Looking at my records:..................

My "1979 stock-toyota 25mm-spring-eye springs" are 68mm wide at the eyes whereas the "OME 35mm-spring-eye springs" that I had (I've sold them now) were 69mm wide. That's only 1mm difference (which I'm sure a lot of people would ignore).

And the 68/69mm measurement corresponds with the top spring in your photos. (I suspect the other springs isn't off a forty cruiser at all but I could be wrong.)

Cheers

PS. I suspect that narrow 2 1/2" wide spring wouldn't fit either a 1978 or 1982 FJ40 (but I could be wrong).

Hi All:

A lot of mis-placed info here; perhaps correct for stock Toyota springs, but not for OME springs.

OME 40 Series leaf springs fit all years up to 1984. Different spring bushings are used, however, depending upon the year. The spring width that OME uses is same as stock Toyota springs.

August 1980 and newer 40 Series use the same size spring eyes as the 60/70 Series, while the older rigs have smaller spring eyes. Old Man Emu solves this problem by using a large spring eye, and supplying either the SB-1 bushings for the 08/1980 and newer rigs, and the SB30 bushings for the 07/1980 and older trucks.

Regards,

Alan

It would be nice if it were possible to employ 24 identical bushes (SB30 or whatever) when fitting 35mm-eye springs to older cruisers (as you imply Alan). But unfortunately you're stuck with the fact that your chassis still has the smaller diameter (25mm holes) for 8 of the bushes to fit inside.

(The only way to get back to using 24 identical bushes is to perform "specialised welding/fitting work on your chassis" to enlarge the chassis dimensions to accomodate 35mm OD bushes.)

And fitting 35mm OD bushes to fixed-pins that are designed for 25mm OD bushes requires a different approach. You can no longer fit the last bush to the pin and then poke it through and bolt-it-up because it won't fit through the hole in the hangar.

I'm not saying you can't fit the latter-style springs to an earlier-style cruiser. I'm just saying that it is not all "plain sailing" and "you're left with a less-than-ideal result".

thanks for all the info i discovered that the 78 has 4inch hc springs just SUA. considering just doin a SOA thanks again.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If you are thinking about going a different direction on those OME springs from your '82, I would be interested in buying those if they are in good condition. Then you have a clean slate to work with. You know, just looking to help out.... PM me if you want. Merry Christmas.

FINALLY goin to buck up and try it. what bushings will i need and who do i order them from??

I put the newer (80 and later) springs on my 79, wasn't that bad. SOR has all the bushings...cant remember part #'s, just measure I.D. of spring eye (will be the O.D. of bushing) and O.D. of bolt (will be I.D. of bushing.) Simple as that.
