i have been told that the rather good looking 80 series wide rims will foul on the steering of a 75 series ute.
can anyone confirm or deny this from experience?
i messed up the title, what i mean is GXL rims

I have the 80 series Steel 16"X8" wheels on my BJ74(not sure if these are GXL or not). This requires spacers because of the steering. I am fairly sure that the 74 stering dimensions are the same as a 75, but I may be wrong. The spacers were alloy 1" wide and there are no clearance problems what so ever. I hope this helps.

Gday.
Those grey/silver GXL 16x8s touched the TREs on the 1991 HZJ75 in my avitar. But I THINK they do fit on a LATE 75srs.
Are these the wheels you are thinking of, on a 1993 HZJ80.
They were offset 13 or 15mm more than a typical generic Sunraysia, from memory.
IIRC, there wasnt much in it - you could possibly turn down some old rear disks to use as 6mm spacers.
