Lately I have noticed a stange noise from the RH side wheel whenever I hit a bump on the highway, Kind of makes a buzzing vibrating noise, then promptly goes away, off and on. Alignment seems ok, noise does not seem to disappear when braking, and the tire(33x12.5") does not appear to be rubbing anywhere, 4WD works ok too, although the RH locking hub is a little stiff. I rebuilt the seals and bearings, but that was on the LH side. So, I removed the wheel in question, and there seems to be a bit of play in the rotor/hub, maybe 4mm (3/16") or so. Should this play be near zero? I can't think of what else may be causing this, re-tightn hub nut and re-adjust preload?. Figured I would ask here before getting into hauling the hub apart unnecessarily.

I had a similar noise which drove me to the brink of insanity until I discovered it was the muflaps.:D

If not the mudflap it could be something else rubbing on a tyre

Well, I got the wheel off already, might as well poke around and have a look.

yep, looks like the hub seal went fer a s***... the hub is filled up with rusty coloured dried up grease. Good thing I already have the bearings and seals. This sucks, could have sucked worse though...

funny thing though... the outer bearing is almost fuct (discoloured, like it was getting hot, rolling like s***), and full of dried up grease, but the inner bearing looks fine, very strange. So, new outer bearing both races, stuck in the inner race of the inner bearing, since I'm here already. No fun packing cold bearings with cold grease, out in the cold... Santa, this Christmas, I want a heated shop, would a lift be asking too much?

At least the knuckle seal is good, the diff oil didn't come pouring out when I took off the hub. Something to be thankful for :)

yay! all done :) (sort of), bad outer bearing & oil seal. play is all gone, glad I caught that before it really went fer a s***. I don't trust any mechanics down here. Clueless morons at the Toyota dealers too, called several dealers looking for the SST for aligning the knuckle shims/bearing preload. "What kind of seal do you want?", "No, no, 'special sercive tool' #XXX-XXX", "So, what kind of seal is that?", "NO, SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL (very slowly)", "Oh, we don't sell tools here, maybe try Home Depot." , "You are a fooking moron." Thank god SPX/OTC is on-line.

that made me laugh, thanks..

Glad to be of service, I'll be here all week, try the veal...
The guys at Nelson(BC) Toyota, on the other hand, were great, they scored me 24v dash bulbs, SST's, everything a fella could need.
