so I am looking to put some wider wheels on my lj78. My stock tires are 225/75/16.

What are my options? I'm not sure where to start.

thanks

John

\that is straight onto the stock rim? it can handle the width of that tire? so how do you guys deal with the speedometer? that will cause my speedometer to be to slower then the actual speed right?

Stock rims vary in width. For example, my 16's are 7 inches wide and I'm running them for winter use. I have 238/85/R16s on them. My earlier wagon wheel 15" stock rims were 6 inch. I ran 33/9.5/R15's on those

The width of the rim will determine what width of tire you can put on. If you can find 8 inch you will have a huge range of options for tire size choice. It's best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations as to what tire size to choose. Specs on all their sites will give you a section width.

The height of the tire will change your speedometer. You can source correction kits but I never have bothered. You can do a search here on mud where this is discussed but going to a 33inch tire gives you speedometer reading that is about 10% out from the stock tire size that came from factory with is about 29-30 inches. Your speedometer will read slower by about 10% than your actual speed with a 33 inch tire.

Wheel choice is important, you need to be able to clear your brake callipers, tie rod ends, and under full articulation, your tires should not rub anything.

Best all rounder is a 11.50 by 32 inch tire. I'm running 33 12.50's R15 on an 8 inch rim with a 0.38 offset. I Have a 3 inch lift and I get rubbing on the inner fenders at the rear under full articulation. Just enough to rub the undercoat but not foul on the metal.

Since I haven't run 16' wheels with offroad tires I'm not very familiar with sizes that will work for you.

Cheers,
John

Hey John,

thanks for the info! that was very helpful. I'll measure my rim tomorrow and see what I can do.

Hi John, check out BFG's web site, go to tire specs. you'll find what tires fit 7" rims right up to 10" rims. They list the hight in inches for metric sizes, eg: 285/85/16 is 331/2" high. I have a set on my BJ74, the acceleration is down but handling is improved. good luck in your search.

Hey bobbj74, thanks for the info. yeah I will be putting on BFG AT's @ 265/75/16.
