I've had 4 Cruisers. None of them has had this issue.
Not in hi range or 4low.
I remember once driving a brand new rented Fiat UNO up the Andes. When we passed the town of Santo Domingo (Venezuela) which is about 7.000', the vehicle has a serious power loss and the cabin smelled like gas.
I checked the engine & carburator. Then I noticed that fuel wasn't getting to the engine. I opened the gas tank and the pressurized gas cap literally flew from my hand. After this letting the pressure out, the car ran just fine.

Since the tank is pressurized, this would assume that the evap system is not releasing the pressure, on the 100 is there an electronic valve connected to the evap system to release this pressure to the CC? I know on some european cars theres a valve controlled by the ECU which opens and closes to evacuate fumes from the tank.

I'm getting the smell too now. Most noticable when going from home (~1100') to higher altitudes, ~7000-9000', and hot, but also at cooler temps. Will try a new cap tomorrow and see if that helps.
I had a similar problem in my 62, but it was due to rust in the body around the fuel filler.
If the cap does not fix it, there is a line from tank to charcoal can. to capture fumes. If that line is plugged or crimped it could cause this.

X2 except that I live at a little lower elevation, we play at higher elevations with no issues though.

Yeah, I know that didn't happen all the time but that gas smell isn't killing people either. Not that urgent of a possible recall on a part that is malfunctioning...maybe there just hasn't been enough complaints. I mean it's kinda hard to take serious when just a few people walk in a dealership and say that they smell gas around there truck....I wonder why since gasoline is used to power the vehicle.
This is all said from Toyota's perspective all in speculation...I do acknowledge that there is a real problem and I don't dismiss anyone's claims.
Rusty, The post you quote from me is three years old. I have since experienced the problem of fuel smell at the engine bay from the canister vent. This happens when:
- Engine and fuel system are heat soaked from high power low speed climbs
- combined with reduced relative atmospheric pressure from elevation gain and a warming day
This overloads the system and is not a fault but a system limitation. Try taking a 2 Liter soda bottled at low altitude to 10,000 feet, let it warm and open it.
I'd say that was normal performance. That much elevation gain is a challenge for the system.
Does it clear with some full throttle?
Fuel smell at the rear is probably a system malfunction although the fault could be a intake valve on the canister in the engine bay.
I know this is an old thread, but did anyone find a solution to the problem????? I have a Land Cruiser 100 series from Japan and I’m having the same issue!!!
