Why when everything is good does this happen?

Ok, stopped by my long time friend and mechanic. I described the sound and symptoms. He said cat converter right away. It's my DD so I need her back right away. I'm gonna drop it off Fri. In the meantime I'm gonna hope that none of the innards clog the exhaust. The last thing he said to me as I was walking away was "they ain't cheap". I'm not worried about the labor but does anyone have a ballpark on the part?

I have some used cats I pulled off my '89 FJ62. AL has no smog inspections so when it was time to replace the exhaust I eliminated the cats. You can have them for the cost of shipping if you want them.

Thanks for all the replies and for the generous offer Cullman. I thought about hollowing them out and reinstalling but I've heard this can cause problems. What about the O sensors? How will removing the guts effect the tuning? Will it effect the back pressure? Remember it's a '62 and there are 2 of'em. Thanks again! BC

The O2 sensors are infront of the cats, so the cats have no effect on the chemistry at the sensors. Many guys delete the cats with no noticable effects. Mine was less cats when I got it.
