Why Toyada w/ a "D"

I looked at my 93' power steering box yesterday and notice it was casted with Toyoda on it with "D". What is the history on this?

Sewing machines originally made by toyoda, that is still the name of the company that makes them in Japan. Changed for the USA folks and marketing. Family name is also toyoda..

My HS Japanese teacher was Mr. Toyota. He sure was pissed that he wasn't related to the Toyoda family. I never looked up the TEQ symbol in my dictionary. Wonder if it is Toyoda or Toyota?
