I completely agree with this.... they have completely lost trace of what the land cruiser is and was. The land cruiser is the reason toyota got a foot hold anywhere in the world outside of Japan and should stay true to that formula.

Why the Land Cruiser is the worst selling SUV in America

And to be 100% if I had the money for an SUV of that price I would either buy a Range Rover (just nicer looking inside and out IMHO) or a super duty and pocket the rest.

Yep, the article nails it on the 200 Series.

Quite frankly, I don't think the 70-Series would sell well here either unless Toyota pimped it out. You're already looking at - what? +$50k for an SUV? If they could bring the price down and keep the amenities basic, it'd sell. But they'd likely option it out and jack up the price.

For 200-Series money, I'd head over to an M-B dealer and come home with a G-Wagen.

do the new G's come with a diesel in the US?? Or factory lockers..... I can't recall. They are nice looking though.

I don't think the 70 series would sell like hot cakes right away, but I think what Scott said in the article is right the 70 would show people what an SUV could be and help sell some corollas just as a dodge viper shows people what a car could be and helps sell some dodge avengers.

I think if they kept a bargain basement version around the price of an explorer or wrangler and the more upscale version around a grand cherokee it would sell. Might take a few years of struggling sales for the US public to catch on to what it was first though.

The G does come with solid axles front and rear as well as lockers still. Only available in gasoline v8 engines though.

I think I would be in the market for a 76 series. Big enough for the family and can do it all. Looks like a cross between the new 4-runner and a G-wagen. Sadly I'm still not sure I would pay 70K for it.

Land Cruiser was never ment to be anything but a specialty truck. A very rugged go anywhere take anything truck. This worked well for years. This ment there was a loyal consistant following. Doctors, hunters, guides, quary owners and rescue workers to name a few. Cruisers were built to work. The new cruisers are excellent cars, but the days of a working truck seem to be over, for now. 2 cents MIke

Jep, the people wants to flight around the world, not drive.

But i`m happy that Toyota build this car, for me it is the best car for traveling and have the option for sleep inside. And it is a size, who allows to use it in europe as daily driver.

Outside of the US, they sell them. Maybe because of the price also not so much, but they sell ;-)

I dunno, the poverty package 200s with the VDJ twin turbo that they sell overseas is a sweet truck:cheers:

I'm sure the $70K+ price tag in a down economy probably doesn't help US sales either:meh:

utilitarian vehicles are not for everyone.
how can you scream "look at me, i am made of money" if you drive a bone basic boxy vehicle.

we live in a veneer society, as long as it looks impressive, people will buy it.

but

there are more and more people that want to get away from computors and electronics in their vehicles. so who knows what might sell next year?

Excellent article. I think the 70 series in all configurations and factory Toyota off road accessories would bring people into the showrooms. I think the price would have to come down and a turbo diesel option would be great.

My hope is that in 3-4 years laws on diesels will have loosened enough to allow easy import of something like an 07 76 GLX. With a 5 speed and a turbo diesel. I like that it seems to have the best features of the 60, a more utilitarian feel than the 80 series, yet has the advantages of the 80.

Yeah that isn't going to happen.

I think the 200 just missed the mark in every department and the sales figures show it. Still a great vehicle and would take one in a heartbeat if I fell upon one but never would I pay that much for one off of the lot with all of the other options out there.
