Why did they stick all these things on the body that are so good at holding stuff?

I pulled my mudflaps off earlier this summer because I was missing one and I'm not really a fan of how they look anyway, and behind every one of them, there was a bunch of crap, and some rust starting. Today I pulled off the silver trim that runs along the bottom of the car, and the same thing was happening. Every major rust spot on my truck started behind either the mud flaps or this trim. It's kind of annoying, particularly since it seems to look better without them anyway.

welcome to sixties? remove and get rid of the rust

the only rust on my 60, besides the lower tailgate, came from the silver trim around the wheel wells.
when i discovered that, i remover the silve rocker panel trim, but left the holes there. .Since then the only rust has been minimal, and only where the old bondo met the original metal.
every fall i need to do some work, but this year ive got some new coatings to try out, including the rust bullet stuff.
figure i can keep it in check until either a catastophic engine failure, or the frame cracks going over a bump.
I do plan to treat the rear frame with the POR-15 or Rust Bullit, but got to find the time.
but first, im gonna black out my grill, like the giuy on the upper posts!!!!!

I know, that seems to be "cool", i tried to get my holes welded up when i painted it but the wife was like "no thats how they came originall", i'm like f*^*&^en who cares, it is not necessary

The hell with that. Is it your truck or hers? If it's yours, do it anyway. I pulled ALL the trim off my truck and I love how it looks without chrome.

welcome to the off road world ... I thought the issue is replacing all useless stuff ( mud flaps .. baaahhh ) and change it of other more usefull stuff as winch bumbers .. hahahaha

Realize these trucks were originally sold to more of the luxury truck crowd back in the 80s. The FJ62 moreso. The reason 80s and 100s have so much plastic an leather is because Toyota decided that's how they'd sell them best. It's the way the outside world sees Americans. We're just a freakish subset of America. :)

edit: since your profile doesn't say, i'm assuming you're from the US
