As the title says, the other day in a moment of introspection, I was wondering what I was writing back when I just joined MUD, when I selected the "see all posts" on my profile it only went to the 250 most recent posts which only takes me back to like Jan of 05. Is this an attempt to save server space or am i doing something wrong with the search? Thanks.

Wierd .. I can get back to posts in 2002 ... *W*

Yes, weird, any ideas why? I selected see all posts and see all threads and either way it wont go past the most recent 250 posts or threads. I like to read and re-read what I wrote especially cause Mud was my first major experience with a live forum format and I know that it took some time to take things easy and not interpret wrong intentions and stuff. Hell I got into an incredibly stupid argument with Cary of all people over vacuum tube audio of all things!!! Anyway, if someone can show me what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

did you find the thread on vacuu, tube audio?

I'd like to read it. That's always been an interesting debate.

Didn't we have to re-register after the big upgrade a year or two ago? Maybe if you look using the "user name" field it only goes back to that upgrade, but maybe try looking using "key word", worth a try, I guess??

Sorry Turbo ... If I the usual search , I'd get the same results you did . You're not doing anything wrong at all . :) . Once I saw your thread here , I looked a wee bit deeper and found the big stash ... but it's not my place to hand out that info . . .

. . . but I can tease a 'lil , can't I ? :D

Bottom line ... fear not , it's around someplace . Whether there is a front end to search thru it is another question . Woody ?

Sometimes I can be wayyyyyyyy dumb ...

search is set to limit to the first 250 responses, regardless....helps control server loads.

Use advanced search, and you should be able to go back as far as you like by editing the time frame to search in.

no posts have been deleted...

Cool, thanks Woody, I knew you would know!!!

Well, Woody, sorry to pesticate but I tried to take the advanced search all the way back and it still wont. I made sure any date was selected. Any ideas??? Thanks.

I just did a quick search for my posts....one year old and older, under my username, and picked up stuff from 2003 with no problem....

Woody, thanks so much man, I put in those same parameters and it did indeed work. The other way I was doing it was with the "any date" selected so it seems that the search will provide up to 250 hits and how you set the "window in the timeline" matters. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Sorry to bump this thread through the years but I'm having a hard time arranging the search dates to view threads between specific sets of dates regardless of how the search is setup. In other words whether I select to see posts or threads I get 250 responses starting from newest to oldest, or from oldest to newest and then either which way with all the other separate specific timeframes already available ( 3months, 6months etc) but there is a wide window of posts that are always "invisible" to search basically because of the 250 response limit. Woody I was wondering if you could add a "2 years ago and older", "3 years ago and older" etc. in extra increments so that this problem doesn't present? Or even better is there a way for a user to type in whatever they want for the search timeframes (ie. 1.5 years and older, 4.5 years and older) just so that those with higher post counts don't only get archive access to the oldest or newest 250 posts/threads. Thanks so much.

250 will be the limit

doing it by 'years' for some users is only 10 posts...
for others, it will be thousands, and that search would kill the db server.

What I meant was to maintain the 250 limit but give more than just the 3 months, 6 months and 1 year markers. Should stay the same strain on the db server that way right? IOW, from two years ago and older 250 responses, from three years ago and older 250 responses, etc. In fact if it is possible (I'm not sure that it is) to have the user put in the time frame in fractions or in wholes (ie 1.5 years, 2.5 years, etc) you might even make the number of responses smaller to save some strain on the db server. Plus we won't "lose" the learning we have had here from way back when. There's gotta be a way Woody, there's gotta be a way. :D Thanks.

...which involves re-writing the stock vBulletin search....which I'm not gonna do :)

That's fine just realize that as time goes on and our participation grows, this problem is just getting worse and worse for everyone.

none I know of

Who cares about that, now the ability to go back and basically see alllll your posts, not THAT would be something lots of people would care about! :D :flipoff2: :D
