Thats nice to hear (no pun intended) that if I do get the HT itll function for my current intended use - 5 to 10 miles.

Ive been set on getting the Y2800 and a 2M Wilson mag mount combo (nice set for a newbie) since I got my license. But never got around to buying it. Now Im leaning towards a nice Yaesu HT for a grab and go - for someone with limited free time to install a mobile.

Ill see...

Handhelds work just fine Alan.. and like sdnative said, if you're having issues with getting out with a rubber duck antenna you can always connect them to a magnetic mount antenna. With the normal antenna, we've hit big bear from down in Long Beach area with a handheld inside the house. No problem. I plan on getting a handheld 2 meter one day for hiking purposes.

The external antennas would be great to extend the limited capabilities (sp?) of the HT. I was looking at the Diamond antennas for the HT last night at the Expedition Exchange web site - not bad. The HTs are looking attractive right now .
