Whos running HAM?

Yep, callsign will go in my sig along with a new vanity plate on the rig.

I went the HAM route primarily for Emergency use.. not to yack. Besides the internet has taken over.

"Instant message is the new CB radio" All the goobers sit behind a monitor now instead of a squak box.

However, a few of my buddies run HAM's and now when we go on trips we can talk crystal clear!

Just got back from the Ham Radio Outlet.. picked up the last Diamond Super Gainer SG2000HD antenna in stock! Said they had 16 of them a week ago. Thank god they had one, its a bitchen 2meter dedicated antenna and they said they're being disco'd! Also got upgraded to a Yaesu 2800m from a 1802m cause they said they had plenty of those in stock too when i called and found out when arrived they had zero! So im stoked. Cant wait to install, starring at this crap on my desk here at work! Is it 5 yet!?

I must say, though, that I was expecting to spend hours of listening pleasure on the radio, what with hams, police etc... (Another reason to get a dual band.) A bit disappointing actually. Very little out there in the first place, and of that smallish number of informal ham chats a significant number of fairly inane conversations about the weather, medical problems and all... I didnt' get on a net yet though so that might be more interesting.
And unfortunately, no chance to use the radio on the trail yet since the few locals are still on CBs...

(FT, don't forget to put your call sign in your sig! :D)

Interesting, so you are saying no one wants to talk to you? That's a surprise. It must be your lack of a call sign.

Maybe you should try a few on air polls, or a barrage of questions to break the ice.:D

We'll talk to you at Surf and Turf IF you post your call sign. I have posted my call sign several times and I don't think there are any stalkers on IH8MUD. I could be wrong tho... If someone does steal my identity, it will be ok if they cover my kids' University costs!

Socal--Congrats!

"4 out of 35 on the exam? It OWNED you! LOL"---That's coming from James "100%" Doh. I missed 1.

Dave congrats!
Depending on how fast they processed your paperwork it shouldnt be long (less than a week for mine) before you get your call sign. The radio/ant will probably arrive slower. :frown:

... I missed 1.
Im in good company...now if I can only wheel and be a Doc just like you. :D

Just saw petrolhogs Official Check In SC 80s post - 2M and a nice rig at that!

Dave, itll be a yaesu and a compatible ant (price:function) - should be end of summer (apologize - thats what I meant.)

Here are the 2 meter pics. I installed it today. Used a RAM mount for the radio just like the GPS. Worked great once again! Driver area looks like a gadget store now. The antenna attached via the Diamond UHF mount that fit perfect into the ARB tab. The antenna folds down or is removed when not in use. This antenna is beefy!! 65mph on the fwy and it doesn't even budge.

here are the pics..

The RAM mount fit perfectly down into the cubby hole and still gave enough room for me to tighten up the adjust knob.

and open the center console...

Good use of the mount very nice install. Easy to manipulate.
Too bad you cant detach the 2800s face plate - itll save you alot of room in the transmission area. Or can the 2800 detach? I dont remember reading about it tho.

I like the antenna on the bumper (youll probably catch some flak about it not being optimal).

I cant wait for the performance report!

My choices so far:
2800 with 2m wilson mag mount - save some coin$$$ combo
7800 with a Cobra ant (not sure of model yet) - just go for the dual and dont worry about upgrading in the future decision but $$$.
But itll really depend on how much is in my pocket when I need to buy.

Looks great! Cruiserdrew has a similar setup w/ his 2800. It will be nice and easy to fiddle with.
Do you think the antenna should go on the pass. side so you won't be staring at it all the time directly in front of you?
Nice install, nice that the passenger can swing the gps and radio around to use too.

No dedicated 2 meter radio has a detachable face that i know of. They're all dualband. As far as the bumper performance, i know.. but im out of room! It was like the last spot.

It doesnt bother me, the limb risers bugged the hell out of me for a while, now you can put a billboard on the dash and i won't care. Plus, not that it matters, but the radio antenna is on the passenger and the Wilson 1000 is on the driver.. so it's balanced between the other 2 antennas on the rig. Yeah the RAM mounts are great, i can loosen both units up and twist them around any direction basically.

We'll see how it performs when i get my callsign. Already picking up a ton of people on the way home from installing it.

big one, gotta be around 5dB or so I'd guess... nice.
How'd you hold this Ram mount in the cubby?
any weird electronic noise from being up front?

Yeah 5.2. This antenna has some amazing reviews and for a dedicated 2 meter it's supposed to be one of the best. I have learned through the years not to skimp on the antenna. It really makes the radio.

It's screwed into the floor, you have to disasemble the mount to get enough room down in there. No noise that i can tell from it being upfront. I know several people that run them off their bumpers with no problems.

We'll see how it works out. I still havent ran a SWR on it yet.

Forgot.. Here's a pic of the diamond mount i used. Fits right through the ARB tab hole.

You won't pick up any police activity... or at least you shouldn't. They are on trunked 800mhz now... not 160mhz like back in the days.

I listened in on my first net tonight. Was pretty cool actually. I listened in on Catalina Amatuer Radio Club's Swapmeet NET. It's broadcast off of their repeater on the Island. Came in clear as a bell. They had people keying up from all over Socal and even some dude from Santa Barbara. Must of been a good 20-30 people on that thing. I couldn't introduce myself cause i don't have my callsign yet.

Early in the evening i picked up some dudes talking via airplane that was interesting too. It was weird to hear the guy say "yeah i gotta run, they just told me i can land now" lol

isn't the catalina repeater closed or private? (from memory)

Dave - you should be able to logon to the FCC site and get your call sign IIRC from the studying I've done.
