From a good friend of mine "Possibly there's a closed 440 system, or another 2M system that's closed. But I know 147.090 has been an open machine at least since I was first licensed in 1982"

I shall then try this cuz it's coming in loud and clear 100 miles + up North... thanks for the info

today, I had the little 18" on and I could hear the 147 Catalina sort of OK but with quite a bit of noise at sea level. But when I was up on the side of the mountain facing South at around 400 ft, it was clear as a bell....

Congrats

Its located in Santiago Peak.

Thanks!!! Yeah i bought a repeater book. Santiago would be a useful repeater.

Im going over to a fellow HAM buddies tonight to practice actually! I'll be on air tonight around 630:730 PM. Broadcasting from Lakewood CA.

I did look, there is indeed a 448 something closed Catalina repeater as well. Must be a different outfit.
Odd that they say that there may or may not be a PL on yours (147etc) ...

How did the hand talkie perform in the field?
Im thinking of getting an HT first before a mobile. I know they dont have enough W and distance compared to the mobile - Just need something for the trail without hacking and messing around with SWR + wires for now. Dont have the time to leisurely install a mobile right at this time:frown:.

I had the HT paired with a full wave mag mount diamond antenna. Reception was excellent, as was the transmission for the most part. The only issue is you're limited to 5W.

I was able to hit the laguna mtn repeater from most areas in Borrego Springs, except coyote canyon. Palomar mtn repeater was reachable in most spots as well. The person on the other end (in Chula Vista) said I was loud and clear going through laguna.

I haven't tried simplex comms, but guessing from what I've seen so far, if you can see it, you can hit it. I was hitting repeaters 10 or more miles away easily. On the way home, I was monitoring a conversation (on 70cm) through palomar where one guy was in ridgecrest!

If you just need something for the trail using simplex, a HT is more than enough. My primary goal is to be able to call someone if i'm out by myself somewhere. That's why i'm leaning toward a mobile. If I had the funds, I'd get both.

Kinda interesting, but on the way out to Borrego we were listening (through laguna) to either Houtson mission control or the space station. They were taking pictures of the endeavor SS. Pretty cool.
