I just renewed in Nov 02, despite all the bs, because we need a national organization for cruiser enthusiasts and TLCA is the only contender. Also, TT has become a great special interest magazine, and there is still some financial benefit in the form of discounts to be had.
OTOH, when we formed Bay To Blue Ridge Cruisers in VA, all the charter members purposely decided not to be a chapter for a few different reasons, the most important of which was that the TLCA did not live up to its name. As presently constituted, it functions more as the TOHVA [Toyota Off Highway Vehicle Association] and seems dedicated primarily to the sport of rock crawling, although other vehicle purposes get a frequent nod in TT.
We gathered together as a group of Land Cruiser owners to form a club for Land Cruiser enthusiasts, not other Toyota 4WD vehicles, although many of our members own them as well. Ironically, under current rules of the TLCA, that made us ineligible for chapter membership anyway unless we allowed members with other vehicles in as regular members, which we decided not to do.
I don't regret the club's decision in the slightest, and am proud to have served as the first president for two years. We are the most active land cruiser organization in our state with the largest current membership and still growing while the TLCA related chapters have declined. This is not a coincidence, just a matter of focusing on the vehicle, not the sport, a distinction I have made before on the LCML and in other cruiser related venues.
It is not as if we disregard those who wish to join BBRC but don't have a L/C. They can become associate members and upgrade their membership status and club privileges when they acquire one. But the club stays focused on what really brought us together in the first place, which is our ownership of a particular vehicle. It is no different than belonging to a Corvette club, in that you don't change the focus just because somebody with a Camaro wants to join. That logic escapes some individuals with the best of intentions who want to hang out with others that enjoy the same activities, but there are tons of 4 wheeling clubs for that purpose.
And although we are not a chapter, we do require that our members join individually to show support for those efforts that we value. But we would have to see a major reevaluation of TLCA's stated mission before we would ever consider being a chapter...
Ok, off my soapbox. Congrats, Tony, and best wishes for your term of service.
