Just to put my vote in here, I'm in solidly for renewal as support for the new officers, and will use what influence I have in Lone Staar Cruisers to make sure the members are also.

I will be renewing when my membership is up. I like the trails - would like to see more tech and mods - but it is a good magazine. Articles such as Nolen's on the evolution of kate are great to read and gather information.

I can't see undermining the TLCA organization by not renewing my membership.  Just think what would happen if half the members decided to not renew, just because they were unhappy with the politics.  Destroying an organization isn't the way to bring about changes within it.

IMO, TLCA has done a poor job in the past of recognizing their lost memberships. According to an '01 issue I have handy, there were ~4,000 members at that time with the last ID being ~12,000....is a Land Cruiser enthusiast specific organization REALLY that poor at retaining members?? Many of us are fanatical in our support...and it's hard to find many cruiser owners that aren't....but only 1 in 3 remain?

My spending dollars reflect my satisfaction with a product/service. If a vendor doesn't provide me what I believe to be the service I expect, I change vendors...same with products. Granted, TLCA is in an exclusive position as the "only" publication of it's kind, but that doesn't mean they should coast along...

That said, and as I noted above, the attitude change and ideas presented by the new board and reflected in the membership response will keep me as a member for another year....

Brian...

your comment about recognizing lost members (or the lack there of) is correct. But even more to the point, we need to recognize our 'renewing' members and provide an easy and timely way for them to renew so they don't become.... a lost member.

I believe one of my most difficult tasks will be contacting lost members within the last 6 to 12 months.... but that's another topic.

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and continued support!

I have been a member for many years and will continue to be one in the future. I personally do not contribute much but I still feel passionate about Land Cruisers. The information that I gleen from Toyota Trails alone makes the membership fee worth it.

I have always had a positive attitude of TLCA, even though there has been internal / external problems. But with Tony "damn glad to meet yah" at the helm & Todd taking over for Henry, this year will be the start of a new / positive era for TLCA!

I will renew now & for the long-run, & Tony knows he can count on me for what ever assistance required.

I too will renew! :D
I to will work hard over the next several years to bring new members into TLCA, and hopefully being back members that have dropped by the watside somewhere.

TLCA is a great organization - due to it's members.

I am doing more than just renewing...

I am renewing my attitude.
I am renewing my optimisum.
I am renewing my approach.
I am renewing my friendship.
I am renewing my goals....

but more importantly, I plan to renew TLCA!

How?

By getting involved.  By listening.  By forming a team atmosphere, one of fun, friendship and focused direction.

If you're on the fense, give us one more shot... give us 12 months by renewing your membership and see if 'We' can make a difference.

Soon, other organizations and associations will look to us as a benchmark for success.  (that is part of my renewed optimisum.)

Membership, up and to the right... I like that!

I just renewed in Nov 02, despite all the bs, because we need a national organization for cruiser enthusiasts and TLCA is the only contender. Also, TT has become a great special interest magazine, and there is still some financial benefit in the form of discounts to be had.

OTOH, when we formed Bay To Blue Ridge Cruisers in VA, all the charter members purposely decided not to be a chapter for a few different reasons, the most important of which was that the TLCA did not live up to its name. As presently constituted, it functions more as the TOHVA [Toyota Off Highway Vehicle Association] and seems dedicated primarily to the sport of rock crawling, although other vehicle purposes get a frequent nod in TT.

We gathered together as a group of Land Cruiser owners to form a club for Land Cruiser enthusiasts, not other Toyota 4WD vehicles, although many of our members own them as well. Ironically, under current rules of the TLCA, that made us ineligible for chapter membership anyway unless we allowed members with other vehicles in as regular members, which we decided not to do.

I don't regret the club's decision in the slightest, and am proud to have served as the first president for two years. We are the most active land cruiser organization in our state with the largest current membership and still growing while the TLCA related chapters have declined. This is not a coincidence, just a matter of focusing on the vehicle, not the sport, a distinction I have made before on the LCML and in other cruiser related venues.

It is not as if we disregard those who wish to join BBRC but don't have a L/C. They can become associate members and upgrade their membership status and club privileges when they acquire one. But the club stays focused on what really brought us together in the first place, which is our ownership of a particular vehicle. It is no different than belonging to a Corvette club, in that you don't change the focus just because somebody with a Camaro wants to join. That logic escapes some individuals with the best of intentions who want to hang out with others that enjoy the same activities, but there are tons of 4 wheeling clubs for that purpose.

And although we are not a chapter, we do require that our members join individually to show support for those efforts that we value. But we would have to see a major reevaluation of TLCA's stated mission before we would ever consider being a chapter...

Ok, off my soapbox. Congrats, Tony, and best wishes for your term of service.

Hi Mike and thanks for the input!

the analogy you have presented reinforces my notion that all clubs are dynamic in nature and ...all are unique. (even though they may share the challenges.)

As I have noted in other posts, I believe that creating a club that withstands the test of time is more important that simply creating a Chapter club. I believe your members made the right choice not to go Chapter club, for the reasons you have noted.

Also, I am more than happy that your club 'encourages' TLCA involvement... I would rather have a club say no to chapter status and yet work to support TLCA .. than have the opposite.

many thanks!

when i bought my first cruiser, i knew nothing about them and neither did my local toyota dealer (the other midwesterners who've had their cruisers for a while will know what i'm talking about), so i had no parts source except for specter.

then i found out about tlca. i've met some of the best people through tlca, i've bought their parts, wheeled with them and my best and longest lasting friends are those that helped me start windy city. and i get a cruiser/toyota specific magazine to boot.

tlca #1431 and proud of it

I will renew this fall and for many years to come. After many years of "loner" membership I have finally joined a TLCA club (TOTR) and am planning to attend Rubithon for the first time this year. Toyota Trails and the LCML list, which I discovered through TLCA, were the only source of reliable information I had for a long time. I know that there have been a lot of problems recently but that is to be expected in any organization. I have resolved to take a more active role in this organization that has proven so valuable to me and once I figure out exactly how to do that, I will. ;)

Rod...

Attending Rubithon is a great way to start!

Many thanks!

I am for all the positive reasons noted above!

I'll be renewing my membership later this year when it expires. I look forward to getting TT every other month! Been to several TLCA runs and had mostly a great time at the the first and a blast at the second. The only thing I could recommend would be to act more like a national organization then a Califorina club.

i used to think like that too, but tlca is run by it's members...members in other areas of the country need to set stuff up other places besides cali. i think they've done a great job of expanding outside of cali. look at all the runs that are throughout the country...moab, gsmtr, black hills, etc. look how many board members aren't from cali.

when i first joined, the club was in cali, all the vendors were in cali, all the cruisers in the magazines were in cali. it's gotten a lot better., but in order to function, people need to step up

I'm thinking about renewing. Is there a secure page for renewing online?

#3728 [formerly :)]

I'll be renewing, TLCA #5513

Trails keeps getting cooler
Events keep getting cooler
Members keep getting cooler
Rigs keep getting cooler
Leadership keeps getting cooler
Cooler beer is getting harder to find though

I'm having as much fun as I did way back when I joined. I'm a 'middle aged' TLCA member now I guess. :-/

cruiserman...

currrently there is no secure page available but you are welcome to either use the printable application and mail in it or contact our Admin personally at 605-388-TLCA (8522)

thanks for the continued support and making TLCA what it is.
Afterall, without you folks renewing, we'd be just another jeep club.... and we can't have that now can we. 8)

many thanks, let me know if you need a hand.

Hey Tony, can you post up how the new renewal drive is going? Inquiring minds want to know.......maybe it would motifate all of us to work a bit harder :D :D
