PO installed some MB Quarts on the front doors and I think he put the tweets in the ceiling in the cargo area? I know nothing about these speakers other than they are expensive, I looked them up, go for about $350.
When I did the PIN 7 mod I found a circuit board (crossover?) mounted behind the DS kick panel with speaker wire going from to/it. The stereo in my truck is AFU the PO had an 800W amp mounted in the middle of the cargo area with a six disc changer and he kept the big sub that he had rolling around back there. I pulled all of this stuff out so I could pack gear in the rig and use like it is suppose to be used. I have spent the last two months doing PM and mods and haven't worried about the stereo but I think it is time to start working on it. Right now the only sound I get is coming out of the little speakers mounted in the cargo area they are the only thing hooked to the factory head unit. PO had everything else powered from the amp. The antenna is wired to the ignition somehow and goes up and down only when the truck is powered on or off.
I have read through most of the FAQ's on stereos and am trying to decide which head unit to get. Should I keep the Quarts?

I've got MB Quart component speakers from and rear and love them. I've got the crossovers mounted in the kick panels. I think they sound great and have nothing bad to say about them.

I had them in my BMW and they were good but very bright for my taste (too much treble) I replaced them with Infinity Perfect 6.5 and LOVE THEM!

Can you share specific model numbers please? Thanks.

I've got the MB Quarts Discus series in the front door. Tweeters are mounted inside the front of the door pocket. All install work done by a pro, so no idea about any circuit board or crossovers outside of the fact that they exist.

Anybody who knew what they were doing would not have put the tweets from the Quarts in the cargo area (normally component tweets are mounted close to the mid-bass units).

Are the Quarts a two way (coax) speaker (meaning do they have a mid-bass with a tweeter mounted in the middle)? If so, that cross over is used for those speakers only. Another way to check this is to look at the wires on the cross over, and determine if the two +/- sets on the 'out' side run to the same speaker, and connect on different terminals. (An externally crossed coax will have 4 speaker connections on it. a +/- for the bass, and a +/- for the tweet).

If you want direct opinions on the Quarts, as far as quality, you'll need to find and post a model number, as they make lower and higher end models.

FWIW, I've used their higher end speakers in other vehicles (in the mid 90's) and they give great bass response if run on a quality amp. Power them right, and you can get away with not needing a sub.

Thanks for the responses. I looked at the speaker grills and they do not have a model #. I will pop the kick panel and get some #'s off of the crossover and pull the grills to see if I can get a # off of the speakers.
Thanks again.

You'll most likely need to pull a speaker from the door and look at the back of the speaker to get a model number. Quarts are usually high end high quality speakers. Especially if that set cost $350. I'd keep them. You just need to take the input wire from the x-overs and run it to your head unit.

keep the quarts, there all good. try looking here for your series. www.onlinecarstereo.com. if they retail for 350 their probably reference series. i like the alpine decks, lot of features and sq for the money.components can run off the deck but really should be amped at least 75 watts rms. the tweets definitly should be somewhere close to the woofers, top of the same door or dash

MB Quarts are great speakers, But like another member said, a little bright or harsh on the highs, im not real fond of thier tweeters, I would have a nice set of silk soft domes than thier packaged ones.
They are high end speakers though.
Correct placement of a tweeter should be no further than 6" away form the mid driver, for correct imaging.

...The antenna is wired to the ignition somehow and goes up and down only when the truck is powered on or off...

Not sure if you were thinking this was abnormal or not? But since you mentioned it orginally...

This is completely normal...What is abnormal is when the antenna stops going up and down (which isn't all that rare).

When you turn the radio on or off (whether via turning off the rig or turning off the radio) the antenna will extend or retract. It will also retract if you go from radio to CD or tape.

You should also have a switch on your dash (top row above the radio/environmental controls if in the stock location) that allows you to manually extend or retract the antenna and also adjust the extension height. This is handy if you go through an automatic car wash that uses brushes because if you don't retract the antenna you can say goodbye to it

I set my antenna to extend about 12-18" which works fine for in town radio reception.
