I couldn't test drive it but I get the feeling that changing lanes will be interesting.

I am dumbfounded by all these concerns about "blind spots", "lane change issues", and "poor visibility" of the FJC. The darn thing has 2 HUGE side mirrors and if you are craning your head around to look directly out the back windows then you don't know how to drive. That's what the mirrors are for! You can't see squat out the back of my Taco X-Cab with a camper but that is not a big deal at all. I just use the mirrors day in and day out. Amazing huh?

Believe it or not, people other than yourself know how to drive. What you fail to understand is that driving in a city known for it's high rate of unsafe drivers is that a clear view out of side windows are a helpful tool in addition to the side mirrors. There were a many a times where I appreciated the extra visibility afforded to me by my 62 windows. I'm happy that you have no problems driving your Taco with only your side mirrors...but I'm not you, I don't drive like you and I know what I want in my vehicles.

No offence Jeff, but you guys are talking about this like it's some fatal flaw or something.

Take a look at all the panel vans, ambulances, trucks, SUV's with the 3rd row seats folded up, 18 wheelers, campers, RVs, pickups w/shells, and on and on. You think all these drivers can't manage traffic because they have no rear side windows? Gimme a break.

"Shoulder check." That's when you look over your left or right shoulder to confirm that what you see in your side mirror is the same as what you can see with your eyes. Learned it in driver's ed back in 1980.

The small windows for the back seat bother me for a whole different reason: I have two small kids, ages 4 and 2. They are restless enough as it is. Subtract a decent window for them to look out and see the scenery, and they'll be even less calm during car trips.

I got to crawl all over a load FJ about a week ago. I thought the subwoofer looked cool! The dash is way cool too.

Could you describe the mirror system in the FJ Cruiser that you saw? I was not able to get close enough to evaluate it. Does it have the "Obects in mirror are closer than they appear" warning for the entire mirror? Were you able to drive it? How was the mirror position adjusted? Did you see a prototype or what is a production model?

On the one I saw, the rear view on direct visualization looks a little cramped and busy. My picture is blurred (1/4 second exposure and the equivalent of 50mm lens hand held), but will give some rough idea of what I saw on looking back. This was a prototype and we were not allowed into it.

I have wanted another fJ40 since the day after I was stupid enough to sell it 15 years ago. I have had a 1k deposite on the Fj Cruiser since Oct last year. I have now had ample opportunity to check out the entire vehicle test it out and think it is even cooler than I originally expected. I now have to deal with the frustration of waiting until Mid April or early May to get my MT 6sdp 4x4 Sunfusion locking rear diff loaded. A little irritatied that the big wigs in managemtent at Toyota already have what I am having to wait for but I guess it's just a perk for being with Toyota..

I've seen it in person, and I think it looks better than the pictures...tho it's "style is still it's style."
It's a capable, comfortable rig.
You will be able to test drive one offroad at TLCA events this year.

Blind spot comments

I sat in one, and thought it was hard to see out of, I mentioned it above. I too know how to use mirrors, and yes it has decent mirrors. But I think it would sit better with me if Toyota had actually put some windows in the thing. I don't know why the Cpillar is so big. We commented on it at the event I was at. Several participants said it was probably structural to account for the large door opening. And that is great, Toyota cabs are structurally sound, and designed well, but I think it is overkill. Also the rear windows, are glass wraparound on the outside, but in reality they are just for show, and are only little portholes. The drivers side is useless to see out of for the driver, and they tapered the interior trim panels to see out of the passenger side window. As for the back window, too small also. Hard to see an obstacle right behind you. I think the rear opening would have been more funtional as a 40/60 split like a 70 series. The large door will get old and the lift up rear glass is phony. It was probably the cheapest thing on the whole rig that I saw. It was fragile looking, and had a funky way of opening. I'm 6'1", my wife is shorter, she sat in it, and had a hard time seeing over the tall hood and dash, and visibility for her out the back was null. She also noted, from a womans point of view, grabbing a few groceries or what ever, would be a pain, as she could not reach over the back door very well and could not see at all in the back while using the rear lift glass. Add a muddy, wet vehicle in the winter time, and you really don't want to lean on it.

I don't understand why the plastic intereior peices on the pillars are so large on new vehicles. I don't like the lack of visibilty on the sides of the windshileld either. I've had several problems with that on Ford and Dodge pickups. As for rear visibilty, as others noted above, the 40 and 60 have wonderful windo coverage. They are great for kids, because they can see out. Whenever I take people in my 60, they always comment on that, wow, I can see out so nicely. There has been times when I've been pinned against a tree or a rock, or a vehicle or whatever, that I was watching it thorugh the sides or the wrap around window on my 40, and I was going oh s***, hope I don't hit that. I can see issues in the new FJ, as it would be hard to see those things.

That's my opinion on it, like I said above, nice vehicle and I'm glad Toyota is going to do it for us and others looking for a good little 4x4, but I think in this modern day of alloys and engineering, they could have put a little more glass in it and still had a secure cab.

Hey trucruiser,

Today I traded my 02 Wrangler sport for a 2006 RUBICON.

Happy St. Patricks day :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

:grinpimp:

I sat in it and rode in it, rear leg room would be my biggest complaint, power and capability are good as well as stability. There were alot of high speed turns and maneuvers that would have flopped my 40 on its side had i tried to do the same thing.
