When running, and at idle, sounds like I have a vacuum leak/whistle...it's coming right from the injection pump area. I knows it's not vacuum...but any ideas???

got a mechanics stethiscope? I would put that on and try to narrow down the source. I like having one of those.

Cheap fun :)

but becareful around the belts and pulleys, don't need to hear you ripped off your ponytail...........

It could very well be vacuum on an xB, xH... due to the diaphragm set up. Since there is a throttle plate/butterfly in the intake, you are developing vacuum and it can leak...

Check the diaphragm and related housing.

I just had the same problem last week. Whistle/vacuum leak sound which i thought was coming from the injection pump area but i couldn't find anything.:frown:

Anyway i did a oil/filter change at the same time, and when i removed the filter box cover and rubber intake pipe to clean the air filter, the rubber pipe had split on the underside and was sucking in air making the noise  I taped it up temporarily to test drive and the noise was gone :D

HTH.

Well I don't have any hoses for the intake...hmmm...

here's my intake setup...I have seen this on another HJ45 with the H diesel so I'm going to assume it's factory?

At lunch I'll take a look today...gonna get a new exhaust setup...I'll try one of those stethoscopes as well.

Thanks!

Let's see that photo again without the air cleaner in place.

You will probably find that there are two hoses that run from a butterfly ('throttle body') to the pump/governor assembly.

Take that photo, and we can go from there.

Cool, I'll take that pic tonight!

thx

those two hoses control the injection pump via the diaphram. differential control.

if they are leaking enough to be heard over the engine expect massive problems. they get very little pressure I imagine.

But I dunno for sure,...... speculation at best.

The H and 2H are pretty quiet when tuned to stock settings and a manifold gasket leak or a leak at the governor housing could certainly be heard. The two plastic lines that go to the governor can also break down and crack. Take a good careful look in that area; a small mirror may help you see the underside of the manifold if there is a leak there.

I'd expect that your engine would not be running very efficiently if there was a good sized leak to/at the governor.

About 20 years ago I was out wheeling with a guy running an FJ40 with a 2F and the intake gasket lost a small piece and the squeal from the leaky intake manifold was quite overwhelming to say the least.

Here is a pic of then engine with the air cleaner off. I noticed that one had a crack...;p so I pulled it off...when I grabbed the other, (towards the rear of the engine) the bolt was loose, pretty loose, holding it to the injection pump. My guess is that, that was causing more issues than the small crack in the hose. Getting new hose today.

Yes she needs washed, isn't licensed yet, so I haven't got to go powerwash the crud/dust off...:)

And in other thoughts...they had moved the batteries to the bed  for a dual battery(sorta) deal. It appears the power (+) is correct, but the negative is just to the frame  And then there is a ground from the starter over to the frame.

Is that correct??? Why is that started grounded to the frame?

Check that all the injection lines are clamped tight (by the little brackets with rubber bushes). I removed my injector pump a while back and when I replaced it I didn't tighten one of the clamps holding the injection lines- the sound drove me crazy, I was sure I had a vaccum leak somewhere but couldn't find it.Then a friend of mine who does injectors went through and tightened all the lines and just like that the sound went away.

Thats my next stop. I put on the new hoses and the sound is still there.

I'll check all the connections...I can easily imagine this thing rattling a few screws loose. :grinpimp:
