Bill. Like I said, I'm OK with the trail. I just said I'm going to be at Loadstone Friday. If you think you can keep up with me.;p

Traci, don't worry. I'll be there Friday, barring any mishaps. I may still go through Coalmont. My co-pilot is coming over for dinner tonight, I'll find out more what he wants to do.

To Whom ever is the "fearless trail leader"????....

me and the kids are along for the adventure, so where ever the trail leads we will follow....

I am leaving out of Abbotsford. I can meet up with you all in Hope, or the Husky in Chilliwack.... need an ETA for either place....

thanks....
Petra

Craig, I will take the back way with you, however Iam slow on highway
100 km/h on flat tops... I will keep up of the pavement!

Iam goin to the island for a week, so i quess the plans will be made by the time I caome back. Iam still in for the early run all the way to the campsite, taking the funnest way...

I talked to Gary T today, and our plan is this: I'm leaving Vancouver about 8:00 am Friday and heading to Princeton to meet Gary around lunch time. From there we double back to Whipsaw Creek FSR and liesurely head up the trail, taking our time. We will camp someplace Friday night, not sure where yet. If the mosquitoes are bad, then we will camp in a dryer area higher up. Saturday we will head to Lodestone Lake and arrive there sometime in the afternoon. We'll join the group and camp at Lodestone Sat and Sun night.
If anyone feels like accompanying us, you are welcome.

Sounds like those leaving Friday have there plans in place. What are the plans for the Saturday departure? Do's anyone have anyother plans?

Bill: Where will you be meeting Gary in Princeton? I could hook up with you 2 and then back track to the Whipsaw FSR...

Thanks in advance..

Hi Petra:
I'm meeting Gary T at the Princeton Castle Resort. I think its on the NE end of town, just past the rodeo fairgrounds. You are welcome to join us. I think Steve T and his son Kirnan are joining us at some campsite Friday night up on the Whipsaw FSR.
~Bill
P.S. I expect to bring my 8 yr old grandson ShiKai.

Drew, this should be a correct update on your tally:

Friday morning - Craig, Mat, Traci, Gary, Bill, Marcin, Rod, Petra.

Friday afternoon/evening - Steve, Jan & Angelica.

The rest haven't posted their departure time or positive showing - Phil, Barry, Mike, Martin, Rob, Chris.

On this thread, you are the only one committed to Saturday.

As far as who wants to go which way (trail vs Coalmont), this doesn't matter at this time. All early Friday people can meet up at the Eastgate gas station (last gas before the trail) and work out the details at that time.

Craig

Meet at what time at the east gate?

I'm planning on leaving Coquitlam at 8am Friday. If anybody wants to meet me, we can arrange to meet at Coquitlam Centre. I figure Hope by 10 (taking back way, not freeway). Eastgate, I guess around 11:30.

From there (if I take the trail), Traci and whoever will go to Loadstone directly.

Anybody who is taking the trail can start. If you plan on going straight through to Loadstone, you should arrive between 6 and 8pm. If you don't plan on going all the way, you should contact Bill and find out where he is planning on camping Friday night.

Craig

Hey Craig I'll meet you at Coquitlum center. For 8 am where?

I'm working until 6:00am friday morning, so saturday would be best for me. Is it just Drew and myself then for Saturday? If so, wondering if you are familiar with the area, Drew. I haven't been there before.

-Mike N.

I have never been there, but have been reading about it for years. Just need to know where to meet everyone Saturday afternoon/evening.

I have 3 or 4 sets of maps for the area so I should be able to find it. Mat/anyone, have you been up there before? Do you have any waypoints that might help?

Is there someone leaving on Saturday that has been up there?

Rod, we can meet in the parking lot right in front of Future Shop. It's visible from the main street.

Mike N and Drew, the best thing would be if you tagged up with someone that knows the trail.

If not, you go about 22km past Eastgate. There will be a dirt road on your left that has a sign "Whipsaw Trail". It's a fairly smooth and dusty road. Don't take any side roads, wait until you get to a fork. The left side dips down and over a bridge, you want to take the right fork. After that it's fairly straight forward. Stay on the main trail. You will pass the following: Old cabin with grave, Wells lake, Falcon Hill and then finally Loadstone lake. If you get lost, keep heading east, you'll eventually run into something.

The other option is to come in the back way. Go to Princeton, turn left on the city centre road, cross the one lane bridge, turn left, follow this road until you get to Coalmont, when you cross the bridge into Coalmont keep going strait through until you run out of road and have to turn left, cross the next bridge, after the bridge turn left, when you get to the next intersection turn right, follow this past the coal mine, after this take all up and to the right forks, until (I believe it's 13 km mark?) you get to a fork that's on level ground, now go left, follow this to the next main fork and you will see a sign (faint) Loadstone lake, now you should be going uphill, when you get to the top and see the lake sign, turn left to the backside of the lake. Coalmont to the lake takes about 20 to 35 min.

If anybody has more to add or changes to the description let thses guys know.

Craig

That's a pretty good route description Craig. People should also be aware that Falcon Hill can be a bitch some years, and that some low rigs without lockers may have problems getting up there and may need a tow. I wouldn't recommend trying it in the dark if you don't know the trail.
As for us, we will camp probably at that second meadow up Whipsaw FSR if the mosquitoes are not too bad, and if there are no rednecks there. Otherwise we will go further on up the trail until we find a suitable campsite. In any case, we will stick that yellow tape that Jan H gave us, to the trees as a marker.
~Bill

I agree with Bill. Did I just say that?

Anyone with a stock (or close to) truck should not attempt this trail with out other vehicles. There should be at least one winch between you.

Falcon hill used to be a big problem. In 1992 we went with 5 trucks (3 stock), only 1 truck out of 5 made it completely up without being on a winch. At that time the hill was much worse, and the only way up was under full throttle. I tell you, that was a scary ride, I thought I was going over the edge twice.

Today, Falcon hill is not as bad. Most vehicles should have no problem. Just go relatively slow, keeping momentum up.

What concerns me for stock vehicles is the "step". Right after Falcon there is the little step. It may be better this year, but I've seen many stock vehicles hit their front bumper on approach, then get high centred on it. A built truck in front for a "little tug" would be recommend.

If you find yourself showing up at the trail and you only have one or two stock trucks (winch helps), I would recommend taking the Coalmont way in. Once there, you can go out exploring with other trucks later.

Craig

Man looks like I'm out for the whipsaw trip now not only can I not get fri. off I'm also going to be working the Sat. Bummers

Oh well You guys will have a blast.

Brad, have you given thought to coming up after work on Saturday? You could be at camp within 3-4 hrs if you come in the Coalmont way. You then get Sunday for wheeling and depending on what time you leave, Monday morning too.

Craig
