G'day Folks,

Let me start by saying that I reckon my title is pretty damn catchy!!

I'm doing a bit of research about which model of Warn winch to buy. What are the benefits and disadvantages of the high-mount 8274 when compared to a 9.5, 10 or 12 k low-mount. It appears that the high-mount is less powerful, but it seems to be the preferred winch by plenty of people in the 4WD fraternity. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

B&B

The advantages of the Warn 8274 -50 are much more than the hig mounted. The gear setup an brake sistem ... are the speed and reliability.

But are only 8 k lbs .. but for sure you have some good options to improve it with new electric motor ( from 9.5 XP ) and some other things ..

I thought and is my opinion is a good winch for a 40 or 70 SWB Cruiser .. but not for a LWB as 60 or 80 series ..

So I thought 12k lbs is a good option for us ..

im not sure i know what im talking about here but i have a warn m12000 winch in an arb bumper and for all intents and purposes (so far anyway) it has served me well. never had any problems with it while pulling my fj60 through or over stuff, and successfully removed a couple of rather large fallen trees from the trail. hasnt given me the least bit of trouble even though its sitting out in the open in bad weather. its the only winch arb implies you should use for whatever thats worth (by that i mean they only make a bumper for an fj60 that uses that winch though im not positive about that part anymore).

anyway i dont really know the ins and outs of what makes one winch superior to another; can just report that what i got has worked well so far and ive asked it to pull me out of trouble more than once.

one love

I just bought an ARB bar, for the "M12000" model winch, but I know others will fit. I wrote ARB asking them which other winches (Warn and otherwise) would work with it, and that was almost a week ago....

I still need a winch but the M12000 seems like overkill and I don't like how the 8274 stands upright. I've never heard of the 8274-50 that Tapage is talking about, might be worth looking into.

the 8274-50 is the updated model with larger motor.

Most any low mount winch will fit as long as the solenoid pack is not integrated into winch housing. (see XD9000i) ARB low mount is designed around the M10000. It is still availble direct from ARB. All other Warn low mounts will require a little modification to fit if memory serves.

What do you plan to mount it on? That will determine the winches that will easily fit.

Having recently had an 8274 all apart, it is much better built than the Planetary design winches. I also have an M12000 and its an excellent winch, if your mounting bar will fit it.

Not warn but my example .

Short bull bar ( yap I do .. custom style ! ) good aproach angle, MM 12k winch low profile .. not blocking air to my rad ..

perfect to me ..

try imagine an 82-74 style winch in this bumper ..

Hey tapage, how much further out does your bumper sit than the stocker? Im trying to come up with a design for a new bumper for my rig, and although i dont have money for a winch right now, id like to make it so that when i can afford one i can stab it in without having to totally redo the bumper. Your truck looks great, i really like the blacked out grill. Are those warn lights?

just a heads up you can take an 8274 and put a different motor on it and turn it into a badass 12,000 pound winch. i cant remember which warn motor it is but my friend is doing this right now.

now that i look closer at this thread this has allready been said... put an xp motor on

Nice, I thought the same thing while I was scrolling down.

My 60 came with a 12K Warn (THANKS, JEFF!!!), mounted in a Stout bumper. This is exactly what I would have done to it. Here's the best pic I have of the front, before rope and hook.
