Simple enough - which brand tire to buy and why? It's getting close to that time (maybe 5k miles or so) to buy a set of new shoes, and I know they've been discussed ad nauseum, so I thought we could simplify things with a quick poll. All opinions appreciated!

I am very happy with my Revos. I spend a lot of time on the road but still want some off-road capability. With this list though I am pretty sure you can't go wrong. I need to drive a 100 with some Nitto's.

Consumer Reports will be doing a light-truck all-terrain tire report this year. If you like head-to-head unbiased comparisons to make decisions it might be worth the wait for the report. Interesting the Michelin LTX did pretty poorly in the CR all-season testing with poor scores in dry braking, wet braking and handling.

Love my Revo's too, but I wanna hear how you use your 100 before I cast my 1 golden vote :D

I would suggest a look at the New Cooper ATR. Very nice tire and lot less money.

Ok - for zero off-road and no snow or ice I would try the Hankook Dynapro AS RH03 ($80) or the Pirelli Scorpion STR A. Both top rated in consumer reports' recent all-season light-truck tire tests.

Hey JJ, sorry to slum off your thread...

... but I am also looking for tires and have an additional question: Will I get any respect (or lose any capability!) if I stick with the stock size for my LX and buy four Revos instead of buying five of the 285/75-16s and dealing with speedometer error and the siginificant extra cost (price per tire and tire #5 for spare)?? I am off-road all hunting season and sometimes for hiking and getting to mountain biking trails. No rock climbing...I just don't think that extra inch of clearance is worth the expense. Thoughts?

What's the price difference at currently?

LT vs P rated tires (Revos)

(Newbie alert... :D My first post to this forum)

Does any here know if there is any difference in a LT-metric vs a P-metric tire of the same type? Especially in the sidewall toughness?

I bought a '99 LC a few months ago and it had new Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos on it in the stock (275/70R16) size. A couple of weeks ago I was in Death Valley and tore an inside sidewall. I had the tires aired down to about 24 psi and when I went back to look at what might had done the damage I didn't see any particularly sharp rocks. The funny thing is that the hole didn't look like a puncture, but it looks like a chunk of sidewall was just pealed back.

The Revo's in the stock size are P-metric tires and stamped on the side is a 2-ply rating for the sidewall. The 285/75R16 size is a LT-metric tire and has a load rating of "D" which is supposed to translate into a 8-ply sidewall rating (even if there are not actually 8 physical plys). I'm not sure if that means the sidewall would be tougher, especially in an aired-down situation.

Now the logical / economical thing to do is just replace the damaged tire. The rest are in great shape. But I don't want to get stuck out in the backcountry with a torn sidewall. It kinda put a damper on the rest of the trip knowing you're running on the spare tire and the next sidewall tear would put you in deep- :censor: ... I had brought a plug type tire repair kit and a compressor, but could not do much about a torn sidewall.

Plus 33's would look good on the truck and give me that extra inch of clearance. ;p But we're talking about $200 for one tire vs $1000 for five.

Any recomendations for a tough tire? The BFG A/T KO's mention that they have "Maximized aired-down" traction, which sounds good. The Nitto Terra Grapler's website has very little information. I think I'd be happy with the Revos if I could confirm that the LT sidewall is tougher.

Anyway for those of you who know Death Valley... The damage happened on the Goler Canyon->Mengel Pass->Butte Valley->Warm Springs Canyon road. The next day we went down Lippincot road and out the Saline Valley South Pass without incident.

Thanks for any input !

The "P" tires of any brand or size have absolutely no business on any Land Cruiser and should never leave the pavement:)

An "LT" tire of any sort will have a stronger sidewall.

The sidewalls of the LT rated REVOS should be about as strong as the BFG AT's or the NTG's.

I would go to a Bridgestone dealer and see what sort of credit they can give you on those REVOS for a new LT set.

I can vouch for the sidewall toughness on the 285's. My set saw an above average amount of crawling over stumps, punjee's, clear cut property property, bottles on road shoulders, and as big a rocks as you'll ever get into w/o a serious lift (for about 20,000 mi before my wife stole it :) ). It has some abrasions on the surface but never the first puncture, or tear.

Clear cut property is always the most treacherous for me. Sharp broken branches, squared off stumps, rocks turned on their edges by skidders, and huge ruts by skidders. No roads to follow and nothing to strap to left standing! A cutover took the mudflap off of my taco the 4th day I had it :D

I LOVE my Revo's! They were great on the snow and ice this winter, quiet on the highway and great traction for the limited off-road I've done.

Question - In a reply above, it was mentioned Bridgestone may credit you for existing tires. The PO installed these Revo's in a 275/70R16 and I really want to step up to 33's, would a Bridgestone dealer give me a credit on tires in great shape with only about 10k on them? I thought I was going to have to ride these out, but if I could upgrade now that would be sweet!

Montana,

Your local Bridgestone/Firestone dealer MAY take the tires back and give you a prorated credit but since you are not the original purchaser I doubt it. A local tire shop may give you a nice credit towards a new set if they are in excellent condition, just depends on the dealer. And there is always ebay, I'm always surprised how much people will pay for tires on ebay, sight unseen:rolleyes:

Hmmmm, didnt even think about E-Bay, I guess I could post them up on MUD for someone who doesnt want to step up in size. Any thoughts on a fair price to ask? Excellent shape, 10-12k on them. I'll look and see if there are any on e-bay. thanks

The BFG AT is a good allrounder and I have experienced good milage with them. The Cooper is a bit of a concern as they tend to throw lugs and also don't give such good milage as expected. The sidewall of the the Coopers used to be 2 ply as well and the guys in my group suffered lots of sidewall injuries with them. The newer version Cooper (just released in ZA) has the 3 ply sidewall and looks like a better option in terms of Coopers

If you are selling them to a fellow Cruiserhead, then half retail might be fair. If you are selling them on ebay, then who knows. I've seen tires with very little tread go for more than half retail LOL. Set a reserve of whatever you can stand and let the games begin.

I say keep with the michelins. Out of all the Lx's i've seen in the shop those tires have worn the best.

My dad has them on his powerstroke and they are nearing 80k, and this is on a vehicle that is much heavier and more powerful than a Cruiser.

My 80's getting AT's when the stock LTX's wear out.
