which tie rod end puller/gear puller? (1 Viewer)

Looking for a model no. or dimensions for a gear puller or similar to remove tie/relay rod ends and steering damper. I ahve read through old threads discussing how best to do these things and I want to just buy the right tool but I am little confused about the options. It sounds like a gear puller is the way to go but I have seen reference to a 2 arm gear puller, 3 arm gear puller, a tie rod end puller and a pickle fork. The tool place I spoke to said they would need dimensions or a model number for a gear puller and doubted it would fit to remove the tie rod ends and could not figure out why I would want it to pull a steering damper.

So, any help appreciated.

I picked one up from Autozone for $20, not sure about actual size or model number though

I have not done the steering stabilizer yet but did the relay rod and drag link at the knuckles for trunion preload. not sure if there is enough access for the puller at the stabilizer?

I have two 2 Craftsman 2 arm gear pullers, can't remember witch I used but probably the larger one.

WFL 9 46903 large
WFS 9 46905 small


dont use a pickle fork on anything you want to keep.

For the tie-rod end, I loaned one from Autozone. They have several different kinds, but you're looking for one similar to Biff's picture. You've been around long enough to know not to us the pickle fork one, so I won't say anything about that :D.
 
The one posted by Christo is GREAT. This is the one to get and that price is very good-I think I paid closer to $50. I have used it constantly since I've owned it. Highly reccomended.
 
I can attest to the fact that the steering dampner is a PITA....I still have not got mine loose with a cheap gear puller or a pickle fork...Im going to torch it off Monday.

Yeah it's not the right tool, and it's scary when one arm isn't contacting anything, but it hasn't let me down yet :cool:

I have it left over from when I replaced the pitman arm on my wife's dad's 93 Dakota. To replace the ball joint for the drag link you have to replace the pitman arm since the ball joint is part of the arm. Kinda wastefull if you ask me, but the parts only like $30.

I don't know if you have CarQuest parts places in Canada-but thats where I got the OTC7315A. I wouldn't mess with 2 jaw pullers. The OTC tool is safe to use and extremely simple. Looking around on OTC's site, they also make some nice floor jacks as well, and appear built for commercial use.
 
ok found one. C$70 unfortunately :rolleyes: but I'm going to get it.
