I would greatly appreciate some advice. Which PTO factory winch is better.

The Ramsey 8000lb PTO or the other one. I say other one because i have only seen one different type of PTO on cruisers that aren't the Ramsey. In fact I don't even know if the Ramsey is a factory winch or not. Any advice on how much I should spend on a complete working set for either one. I bought one 10 years ago for $200 (not the ramsey). and i have seen some priced as high as $1200.

Lastly, will a PTO off a FJ40 fit a FJ45 wagon?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

A lot of guys will argue that the Toyota PTO winch setup is the one to have. There should be no difference between 40s and 45s of the same year. I've seen complete setups from a little less than $400 for an old one with the risk of broken mounting feet to really nice ones off of recent JDM imports for a litlle over $1000.

The Ramsey is just that a Ramsey the other type you have seen is probably a Toyota PTO. I like the PTO unit of the Toyota better than the Ramsey. The Toyota is driven by a gear on the output shaft of the transmission that's inside the transfer case. The Ramsey bolts on the end of the output shaft in back of the transfer case. The weakest point on the OEM winch is the shear pin on the drive shaft just outside of the winch. I don't think the Ramsey has one, at least if it does mine never broken. I pulled a 3/4 ton pickup up a snow covered hill last winter in my FJ25, never missed a beat. My 68 with a OEM winch would of needed the shear pin replaced a couple of times for that pull. I know some drill the hole out and replace the shear pin with a bolt, but I would rather replace a couple dollar pin than some part you can't get any more.

The winchhead on my lv is a tulsa-winch.It's not as clean a mount as the toy head. The frame has 4" added to the front. It used the pto output box-shaft-pillow block. It is a very heavy unit.

pto winch

I am not a fan of the OEM toyota pto. I bought one and it would not pull a 40 up a modest incline I think they are rated for 1500 or 2000 pounds. I also believe to use it you have to be in neutral (but that may be true of all pto's I don't know for sure). Another bad point is that it attaches to the Transfer case at a bad angle and doesn't have alot of clearance (I found out the hard way when I had barely had the thing on and hit a rock and busted the drain plug out of the cast aluminum drive housing. I think I lost the busted piece too so I don't know if I can weld it closed anymore OR if that cast aluminum even welds very well). I am not real experienced with winches but I think that electric may be the route to go for no other reason than being able to be able to drive at the same time as your pulling??
