I'm partial to the vn780, but the new 880 is supposed to be pretty nice too. 
The consensus among Volvo owners I talk with (and they are few these days) is that anything prior to Ford's acquisition of Volvo (1999) is better than anything after... and the rear wheel drives (pre 1993) are better than later. The XC90's get excellent reviews but you are much better off with an '08 Highlander than an XC90 imo.
If you want a sedan .. get an Avalon Camry or Corolla..if a small awd ... the new Matrix.
Volvo is not as dependable, rugged or as inexpensive to maintain as a Toyota...

Not impressed with any new Volvo. Last one I had was a 97, even its build quality was marginal compared to a camry. I know the new stuff is a far cry but even the die hard volvo owners are not impressed.
I would do a Toyota if I had some crazy reason to drive a car again.
Of course I am biased but I have owned them all..bmw,volvo, ford, chevy, chrysler, jeep, toyota, saab (used to be amazing cars) Mercedes, Hondas (unbeatable drivetrain reliability) and more toyotas.
Im back to Yotas and am cinvinced they have always made the best product out there!
Well actually Lexus makes the finest cars if your in that price range.
Check consumer reports reliability reports. Cannot go wrong with a LS400, 450 etc..... Or any Lexus vehicle.

You really can't go wrong with a 240; they're one of my all time favorite cars! (Right along side the 140's and 122's
) The only thing that really kills them is rust. Check the floors, rockers, and windshield surround carefully. The manual transmissions are best, but a well maintained auto is just about as sturdy. My first 240 had over 550k miles on the original drivetrain before it died, and it was not well cared for before I bought it. It only died because the PCV system was all clogged up, and it spewed it's oil out one evening. Sold it for parts, but I swear I spotted it on the road a few months later. Anyways...Buy a 240!
