Hi, newcomer to the forum, enjoyed reading the posts. just bought set of 18'' rims for my 2017 lx570 to replace stock 21''. I am looking for all terrain tires which have good performance on the snow but can also do occasional off road. I am settling down on bfg and currently choosing between following two specs: LT285/60R18 and LT275/65R18, can folks comment on which tire give you more comfortable ride, and less road noise? Reason i am asking is that they come with very different load index, 118/115 vs 123/120, so i suspect the ride would also be different. The load index for stock tire is 113 if that matters.

Welcome. If the only variable is size, the difference in noise and comfort will be minimal. Those tires are very similar to each other. Any E rated AT will be firmer and louder than you’re used to on the LX. You might consider Michelin LTX if you want more comfort and less noise. HTH.

thanks. forgot to mention one with lower load index is D rated and the other one is E rated. Is it safe to say D rated tire makes less noise and gives better ride than E rated one?

If you want a little more sidewall, consider 285/65 and 275/70 too.

thought I'd update this thread to share some of my experience since I just replaced stock 21'' tires with new set of 18'' KO2. Originally, i was going to go with 285/60/18 with D rated KO2 per this conversation, but they were backordered on both tirerack and costco and i couldn't wait for that long as i'll hit on the snow road in Dec. so i took a leap of faith and ordered 275/65/18 E rated KO2. I had these tires for several days now and so far didn't feel much difference from stock tires in terms of ride quality. WRT noise, I could hear a little bit humming sound at low speed like 20, 30 mph, but didn't feel much difference from stock ones at highway speed, no humming could be heard maybe because it was covered up by engine sound. overall, very happy with these tires and will see how they are doing in the longer term.

Personally I found the LX to drive much better with e rated AT tires.

Ride comfort and noise are somewhat personal things. Some of us are more "sensitive" to these things than others. Many on this forum have gone with the E-rated tires and have been very happy with them. I am one of those. What drove me to E-rated tires is the fact that I had D-rated tires on a previous vehicle and had problems with sidewall flats due to sharp rocks when off roading in Colorado. I personally find the ride of the E-rated tires to feel more "solid" or "stable" and, like you, I find any road noise to be overshadowed by wind and engine and roof rack noise. But I have an LC which, IIRC, has slightly less noise reduction built into it than the LX.

BTW, be sure to have the KO2s inflated to the optimal PSI. @gaijin has the best advice on that. For example, per @gaijin's advice I run my 285/65R18 E KO2s at 42 PSI cold. I'm not sure what the 275/65s would be but @gaijin has some tool based on industry specs.

I bought E rated bfg ko2 to replace my stock LC tires, then quickly replaced them with stock size D rated tires. Noticable difference for me. I'll replace them with E rated after I buy a new suspension to make it smoother, but until then the E rated were too rough for my daily driver.

FYI, the Recommended Cold Tire Inflation Pressure for the LT275/65R18E 123/120R BFG All Terrain T/A KO2 tires on @flyingbird 's LX570 is 40psi Front/Rear.

HTH

@gaijin Thanks a lot for the info. Costco tire guy put 45psi pressure. Just curious how did you come up with this magic number, any references you would like to share?

@gaijin has posted his references and reasoning quite a few times on here. You might want to ask the Costco tire guy how he formulated it...

For the LX specifically, by going down to an 18" wheel (vs 21"), you will have increased the sidewall compliance dramatically. Even a load range E 18" tire, is going to be relatively more plush than a 21" wheel with a low profile P tire. Especially on bigger hits. The LX AHC suspension also has an uncanny ability to provide the smoothest ride possible. But NVH will be surely be increased with the K02 tire, if that's what you mean by BFG.

I would focus on the other qualities that make for a great ride. Unsprung weight. Noise. General NVH, perhaps with a less aggressive AT tire.

If you're focused on only the KO2 tire, the difference between those two sizes for ride quality will likely be negligible. With the taller 275/65/18 perhaps having an edge. At the compromise of some handling to the 285/60/18.

With those taller Narrower tires I Would definitely slow down on the curves and not make any sudden lane changes. I would also recommend using Sport setting for high speed driving
