Call and talk to Sheldon or Gregg-man at G&S Cruisers. I have bought many things from those guys and they are top shelf all the way. The compresson on my 1HZ made 600+ PSI on every bloody cylinder!!!
Turbo charge a 1HZ and it will blow the doors off of a 12HT!
add propane and the 12 HT will look like a NA3b...
;^)
the one BIG advantage a 1HZ turbo has over a 12HT is the trottle isn't sensitve in front of a manual tranny...
just my observations

i'm a light footed driver. i have stock tires on it. i rarely hit 3k rpm usually between 2000-2750. i usually get better mileage than the rating for the car. not sure exactly. i wouldn't say i'm a grandma driver either.

maybe i get my speed need driving firetrucks at work in a big city........

Hey, was wondering how you get 28mpg out of your 60? The best mpg I ever got was 21mpg with the 13B-T in the BJ-70. Thanks.

You should be alot better than 21mpg. Diesels like to run at low rpms. You won't hurt anything running it at 1500rpm if it's not working too hard (eg. up hill or towing). If you consistently run high rpms or run up the rpms before shifting you'll be harming you economy and engine life. I've run 900km's on a tank in my '82 BJ60, that's about 30mpg.
If you're blowing much black try reducing the fuel delivery slightly (black smoke is unburned fuel).

Hmm, don't know what I can do differently. When I got the 21mpg I would accelerate so as not to make much, if any, smoke. Cruising at 57mph I am at about 2000rpm. I hardly ever go over 3000rpm because you loose power getting that high. I usually shift at about 2500rpm. It accelerates quite nicely even when accelerating less agressively. I even put synthetic lube in the diffs, haven't done the transmission and transfer yet. What was the stock axle gearing for the Canadian BJ 70'?

Sound's like there is smoke occuring though am I right? How many miles on the engine and have the injectors been serviced recently? Do you know if someone in the past has adjusted the fuel delivery? Many people do that to get more power.
My BJ60 has 3.70 gearing. It sounds like your reving about the same as me though.

There is some information in this post that is not correct. The AA adaptor works with a 6.2 or a 6.5 diesel. I know because before putting in my 420, I ran the AA adaptor with my 6.2 diesel. Also, the reliability of the 6.2 mechanical injection pump is great (after replacing a , but the 6.5 electronic injection pump has problems with the PMD going out because of excessive heat. Everyone bad mouths the 6.2 and 6.5 because they don't have the horses or torque of other diesels. These motors are great in "light duty" applications. Hell, I get 28 miles to the gallon with my 6.2 in my 40 (better than the 8 I used to get with the 2f). If I had the money to put a Cummins or Toyota diesel in, I would in a heartbeat. I would love to put a 4bt or something of that workhorse caliber in my 40! Maybe I'm just jealous of you guys :flipoff2: !!

the stock gearing is 3.7
as for fuel milage, you are quoting state gallons right? if so that milage is not bad at all, the best you will find is 28-30 and that is if the conditions are just right and you are traveling on flat ground with no head wind.
very rarely have i SEEN a BJ70-BJ60 get better than 28 C per gallon...
i am sure we have all heard stories of Canadian diesels getting 35-38 mpg but i will call BS to that one and i have driven a LOT of diesel cruisers.

Are ya'll talk'n USMPG or IMPG?

I've been playing with my BJ74, doing one change then running a tank or two, recording the mileage, then changing something else. It's gotten more and more efficent, less smoke, more pep, etc, but have not crunched the numbers yet. The last change will be injectors but that may have to wait till after Pismo.

Charles, getting 900kms from a tank on your BJ60 is very good. I've driven from Calgary to Kamloops once on a tank of fuel and two complete spring kits in the back, and thought I was doing incredible (630kms and foot on the floorboard a lot of the way). What do you average? In the strange but true category my BJ60 always got better mileage then either of my BJ42's.

That was a trip with a fill in Abbotsford and a refill when I was very nearly dry in Hinton, Alberta (east of Jasper) about 10 years ago. I was suprised at that distance as well. I was driving the '83 Toyota diesel pickup I used to have and my wife was following with the 'Cruiser so we weren't flying down the road. The diesel pickup was not exactly a drag racer.
I think I average in the 700 - 800km range on a tank (my wife records the fills so it's relatively accurate). I was around 700kM/tank for the trip down to Central America and that was with a car topper and a heavy load working up some decent hills with the A/C going 99% of the time!

Fuel economy

"900 km on a tank in a BJ60"I wish i could get even remotely get that kind of mileage out of my 84 BJ60.I would be lucky to get 600km if drove like an old granny.I drive from edmonton to yellowknife once a month.64 litres tank is a standard in the BJ60 correct.
I have a very heavy foot but try to maintain 2000rpm.I also noticed that you are running a axt turbo on your BJ60.What was the fuel mileage like before the turbo.I only have 152 000 km on the 3B with 31 BFG mud terrain and few other mods(rancho suspension, winch bumper) but nothing really done to the drive train.

Yesterday i purchased the rear fender wells body panels for my BJ and found them really expensive from prevoius body work i have done on other vehicules.630$ canadain dollars.

Next step will probably be ARB air lockers front and rear.Hopefully a turbo to follow but they are really expensive also.

On the fuel subject if you have any suggestion they would be really appreciated. Thanks

90 litre tank in bj60 , I get 28.4 mpg imp in my 88fj62 converted to bj62 donor from 85 bj60/h55f . 4:11 gearing with 235/75/15 bfg long trail . cruise at 2500-2550 rpm = 105 kmh corrected .

BJ60 is a 90 liter tank. That trip like I said was a little slower than normal as my wife was following me in the 'Cruiser (granny driver) while I was driving the 2.2l diesel pickup. That was well before the AXT turbo, H55 tranny or other mods on the truck.
Big thing with fuel economy is let the truck breathe easy with clean air filters. The injectors should be rebuilt about every 100,000 kM. I've got a spare set with me down here in case I get some really bad fuel. Keep the radiator blind down in winter as the diesels don't like cold much.
I think the turbo helps the economy but also gives alot more zip which tends to make things go the other way!
If I had to do things over again I'd get the turbo sooner. It makes the truck more pleasant to drive (like being able to go up hills in one gear higher than you previously could).
