FixedThose straws are great for "cannon balls"!
I didn't have ribs, but I thought the brisket was awesome! However, like Nolen said, other than the M&C, the vegetables were a COMPLETE waste......which is really unusual for a restaurant of this type in Mississippi. They had all the "appropriate" veggies (collards, cabbage, boiled okra, etc.), but they didn't have the "soul" you'd expect........taste was LESS than marginal. (Good write-up WNG)So the Cottonland Dives-Only Lunch Crew made a stop at Lumpkin's BBQ yesterday.
Price, Grogan, Thompson and our special, non-Cottonland guest JesS Harrington.
We arrived to great tunes and a well stocked buffet table. Out the door with one-trip for under $9....you can get a multi-trip plate, but no one knew to ask for that so I don't have a price for you.
You are in charge of your veggies but the Chef is in charge of the meat portion. It was a good portion for the $
I got Brisket and Ribs. Ribs are easy to find in MS but Brisket with fat on it is like a rare hen's tooth. The brisket had a nice phat marble on it so I was pretty stoked.
Being on a low carbish diet, I was not able to get the mac & cheese but according to the table, it was the "veggie" to get. Mine were baked beans, green beans and sweet potatoes. All of mine were moderate at best. Veggies...C
Meat....I got a crap pile of 3 ribs. Mine were dry with a little bit of meat but JesS has some sweet looking ribs. Since he did not have an endless plate I did not ask for a bite. He did show me with his professional eye that the rigs were cooked right. I will have to take his word for it. Ribs...C+
Brisket. I will no longer be able to say that it is impossible to get brisket that is not dried up garbage in the state of MS. Of all the places I have tried, this is the closest I have found to Texas Brisket. It was pretty damn good. I may go by there one day and buy a brisket and put some good Rudy's sauce on it and decide if it is great or not. With the cut I got (not quite the extra-moist I asked for), and the sweet sauce, I can't give it a fair shake from my pallet. I will give it a B+
The fact that they had a damn good guitar player banging away in the corner and there was a white hooker in the parking lot when we left, I will upgrade the entire Lumpkins experience to a solid B.
Not being a fan of MS BBQ, I doubt I would pick Lumkins again, but IF you like MS BBQ this may just be your spot.
I did not see any pulled pork which also confused me as I was certain it was a law that you must have pork if you own a BBQ establishment in the state of MS.

I had my smooth-cool mama go by and pick me up some Little Willies BBQ today for lunch. This is the place on Spillway Rd right next to the old Rapids lot.
Ordered up some pulled pork, sweet potato and deviled eggs.
Sweet potato was tiny but good, eggs were excellent and the pulled pork was perfect.
BBQ sauce was syrupy and disgusting, but that is what folks around here like.
I have a trusty bottle of Rudy's BBQ sauce here at Mail It and Copy and fixed that s*** right up.
Worthy.
Julie told me the person that moved it is a different owner from when they were in the place by Bonnie Blair's.
I do like BBQ bird. JesS makes the best.
after enjoying a Bacon-Double with no bun.
We need more of those types around here......If in Northport, AL (right across the river from Tuscaloosa) the only place to have lunch is the "City Cafe" in the old section of downtown NorthPort. The classic meat/three type place.
