Soul Fish in Memphis is great fried catfish. Over in the Cooper and Young area.

Just ate at Babalu. The pork belly tacos are awesome and the mojitos are delicious.

If you ever find yourself on I-10 in Miss on the coast you have to go to "The Shed" in Gautier (right off the interstate 1 exit east of Ocean Springs). Best BBQ on the coast from NO to Pensacola. Make sure and get the banana pudding cup for desert. Ribs are incredible, Sausage, Chicken, and Brisket to die for.. Voted in the top 10 on Diners, Dives, and Drives In's....

I really, really, really don't like that place.

The ribs are WAY too tender. The meat is mushy and just disintegrates before you even chew. The sauce has enough brown sugar in it to send a lesser man into a diabetic coma. My buddies brisket was dry. Never had their sausage but I'm sure they can screw that up too. To top it off the place is frequented by a bunch of insurance salesman weekend biker part time pirates that are all trying to act hard.

I had a buddy in Mobile wanting me to open a franchise for only $500K?

What a deal! Half a mil to boil ribs and and serve them with syrup.

Yeap they are a tourist trap.....just like Rendezvous in Memphrica.

I've gotta agree. Shed BBQ is not good. We tried it 3 times in Gautier and it didn't get any better the 2nd and 3rd times. The owner is trying to get his foot in the door in Austin selling sandwiches out of a trailer. $7 for a little pork sandwich. I don't think so.

You are going to hell.

Probably but Sunday is feast day. It's written in a book or something. Just don't do it at The Shed.

Tried lunch at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale this weekend. It's the one Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett own. Atmosphere is kinda cool (my father commented that it felt like "a poor man's Hal & Mal's), but I thought the food was mediocre. Had a grilled shrimp po-boy that was good but not notable. Later, had dinner at Lusco's in Greenwood. Atmosphere is REALLY good, and the food was OK. I had grilled snapper, although I'm told if I had had a steak, I would have felt more strongly about the meal.

Ground Zero: 3 stars
Lusco's: 4 stars

Food tour of the Delta is on my list. I am a Crystal Grill kinda guy for Greenwood personally.

I ate at this roadside burger joint in St. Helena a couple of years ago. It was then named Taylor Refresher.

Looks like they cashed in but the reviews are still good.

It is by far the best cheeseburger I have ever had. And I have had many cheeseburgers.

I had a Roosters burger today.

Good burger. Not a great burger. Fries were not very good.

The meat was 5 stars, the bun was 4 stars and the toppings were 2 stars.

4 stars....still behind 463, Cool Al's, Cherokee. Right on par with Poets.

Again, good burger.

Damn Chris, that tuna sammich looks off the hook!

I had some stupid expensive meals in Napa. That was by far my favorite.

It is a must in my opinion.

Try trace grill next. It is similar to roosters but different owners and more consistent. Try the onion rings too.

Nolen, you think the Cherokee has 4 star burgers? I'd give 'em 2.

Here's a burger for ya--Billy's Cobra Burger. It's a very healthy choice too.

Ingredients on the COBRA are grilled jalapenos, bacon, cheddar, chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Cherokee burgers are awesome. I can't knock them for anything. Simplicity and absolute consistency are two of the traits I love about them. Not too big, toasty bun, condiments that are not wilted and real bacon. Fries that are off the hook. Cherokee is not the biggest burger, but if that is what you want, get the double with 2 eggs.

Local 463 uses 2 patties of Kobe. 5 guys is 2 patties.......

To me it is not about the specialty burgers. Those can overpower the burger and be truly awesome even if the patty is Meh.

One correction.....Majestic does form their own patty. I was wrong. They use a patty press. I think my biggest "beef" with them is that it cost about $13 to get a 4 oz burger when 5 guys is $8 for 8 oz. I always feel a bit violated when I leave there.

That old guy must have been sneaking into the kitchen to build my Cherokee burgers because none of them even resembled what you describe. They were consistent in their mediocrity. I like me some eggs, but not on my burgers. Fries were good.

Not a big fan of Five Guys. I give 'em a B.

Agree on the 463 burgers. I've had the Angus burger but the Kobe was above my pain threshold. They should be great for the price. IIRC it was ~$15. That's the place in Madison, right?

Best basic burger in these parts, IMO, is at Mighty Fine Burgers. Hand formed patties like your mamma used to make, organic beef, with no frills. $5 for a juicy half pounder.

In Little Rock for the next couple of days. Any recommendations?

Going through there this weekend, asked same question:

Nolen Grogan My boy Bomar was not too high on Cothams. All the TV shows and the food boards love the place. I would hate to sidetrack that far over for hype.

Kerin Drake Gadberry Pizza Cafe is a neat old outdoor place and I love the pizza. It is a hole in the wall. That is down by the River. There is also Cheers...kind of another hole in the wall up in the Heights. I live out West but these are 2 of my favorites when I am in the area. I will keep thinking Nolen.
