I thought others would have the same issue, so here it goes: I have a FJ40 69 and a 76. Did a lot to the 76, whole suspension, seats, etc... 69 is coming along...
Back when I had just bought the 76, about a year ago, I took it to Jiffy Lube ( I KNOW, I KNOW!!! Rookie mistake!) and had the "4x4 package " service done. Supposed to be all fluids, both axles, xfer case, tranny, motor. Since then I havent really checked. The car leaks on the main seal, so the underside of it is always oily. Long story short, it started to ride rough and noisy and shift hard, and I started to think I had to check the fluids.
I had replaced all fluids on the 66 so I thought the 76 would be similar. 3sp vs 4sp tranny, but the plug would be there , easy to find. Nope. Looked all around , headlight on, brake cleaner can on hand. nothing. none of the 2. I did notice a hose connecting the cases, and thought, well, another thing I dont know.. duh, add to the list...
Googled for 2 days, looked at my haynes manual, nowhere noone mentioned WHERE the plug was. Had to be obvious. Today its raining in ATL and I went one more time under the car, headlight on, looking for the #*(*&#@ plug.
Then it downed me.
Someone before me had installed the oil return kit ( MAF Oil Return Kit Transmission Transfer Case ) on the car.
All I had to do was remove the hose, and that was, indeed, the location.
And yeah, both tranny and xfer gear empty. Either Jiffy Lube didnt thight the fittings enough or its leaking somewhere else.
Hope this helps others like me that take DAYS to find out something so stupid!
