where is flasher relay hiding in a 73 FJ40

To save you a moment on drawing up the diagram, I would take my power from the power post of the fuse block, put an inline fuse of probably 10A or smaller and have that connect directly to the flasher. Did I get this right?

FYI I was looking for the flasher today and the PO installed an aftermarket flasher which has three terminals (just like the yota version) but he had only the ground connected and one power connection going in and nothing on the third terminal. The flasher itself is wrapped in electrical tape  and is some brand X.

sounds like you got it. If you want to take it a step farther and have cleaner power going to the signals, take the out of the relay and splice directly into the hazard (need to cut the existing into the hazard) I would need to look at mine to tell you the wire that needs to be rerouted.

Another quick way to test things is to remove the flasher and jumper across it. Then move the turn signal switch to left, right. The lights should come on brightly on both sides. If they do not then clean the sockets and grounds. If you get nothing, verify you have power then start looking at the turn switch...

Thanks coolerman. I did exactly this and the flasher is confirmed to be dead. Didn't have any issues with the actual lighting of the signals. I also fixed my low/high beam issue, which turned out to be a wire that had come undone from a fuse. I still have another annoying issue of the lights in the cluster coming and going, depending on how hard I hit bumps on the road. I have power to everything else, which doesn't get affected. I know the wires going into position 12 on the backside of the cluster ties all of my additional gage lights together which all either go on/go off independent of my explicatives :D:meh:

Just for fun.... I had to replace the relay on my '82 FJ40. Here are some photos for reference.

Can a bad flasher modulle just cause one side to not blink? Passenger tailight goes on, but does not blink, drivers side is fine.
I think it can, mine went out entirely. They all turn on when blinker is moved but do not blink, they just go solid. If I tap on the relay they blink though. The mechanism inside is toast.
