I'm thinking about buying another set of wheels for the 60 when i go to 35 inch tires.

What makes the most sense in wheel size that would give me the most options in available tires approx 35's? 16 inch or 17inch wheels?

I have one set of black steel wheels that are 15 inch in size that my current 33 mud tires sit on. I have another set of FJ cruiser 17 inch black steel wheels that I have some BFG AT's on.

I would like to do away with the wheel spacers and run 35 tires along with just some black steel wheels. I only plan on running an 8 inch wide wheel.

16 or 17 inch wheels...whats the best choice to mate with 35's?

I am running 17" tundra alloys with mine and I am quite pleased. As far as choices, from what I've seen both have pretty good options. The 16" would give you a little more sidewall to flex when aired down.

backspacing and wheel width are the most important things, i don't think it matters 15,16, or 17" wheel. i hate the balloon tire look so i try to go as narrow a wheel i can so you can maximize height. for example, i don't like the looks of a 35x12.50 mounted on a 15x10 wheel, it stretches the tire width out too much in my opinion. also shortens down the overall height of the tire some.

key point.... given a 35 inch mud tire...which wheel size affords the best selection of tires.. 16 or 17?

Is there a better selection of trail / mud tires in 16 or 17 inch? That's what I'm trying to figure out now. Once I do that...then I'll look at the back space issue again. I'm just going to do a 8 inch wide wheel.

Yes...there are better selections of tires...or at least it appears that way to me. People seem to be dropping 15 inch stuff.

Well, at the moment I would probably say 16" is the new 15. There are a bazillion metric sizes for the 16" wheels and it seems like just about every tire maker is making 16" tires. I went 16's on my pickup and plan to go up to 16's on my 4Runner project eventually as well.

With all the new cars coming with 17's more regularly then they may take over soon. Now once you get above a 35, the 17's may offer you more of a selection. I haven't looked at anything bigger than a 35 so I really don't know above that.

Just thought that for a 35 everything will be a 315. Never understood why the 16 is the only rim that they have done that with, guessing the world market for 16s is bigger. 17 and up most everything is in the US standard sizes. Another reason why I would say they will have more options.

Got a brand new set of 16" mickey thompson look a likes Ill part with cheap.
Let me know if your interested.

If your concerned with load rating then the 17 inch is the way to go, you can get a true 35 in a load range c for instance, where as a 16 as stated is a 315 in load range D. Also I have read several places that running a wheel half the size of the over all diameter of the tire is ideal so a 17 would be closer to half. Just my 2 cents.

Sent from my detachment from reality.

any more feedback on the question about...is there a better selection of good mud tires at the 35 inch size or metric equivalent...in 16inch or 17 inch wheel size. I'm wanting to get out of the 15 inch wheels I have at present.

I plan to go with 17", for now that appears to the best option.

I was looking at tire prices....$$

If you come across some 17 black steel wheels that are bolt on...let me know., I was thinking in my case a wheel about 17*8 and not sure on backspacing...and a tire around 35*12.5*17 (on the 60) Roger your setup may be different in comparison to mine dealing with the brake caliper clearance? on the front axle...?

I have stock 60 front axle housing....with the 4runner calipers...I think they are 94 vintage... anyway the caliper prevents the wheel from seating down 100%^ like it should....probally just need an additional 1/4 of an inch or so to clear, maybe less, its not an obvious issue utnil you tighten the lug nuts and you realize the tire/wheel does not spin freely....which is kind of a downer....

I'm running wheel spacers and I can continue to do that but I sure would like to get rid of those and just run wheels.

I do have a set of FJ cruiser black steel wheels and they are 17 inch in size...right now I have some spare AT tires on those. They too require spacer clearance as I recall the last time I checked.

I was just looking at tires on teh web... I did notice a 35*12.5*17 tire and I think something similar in metric at 315 size. Thats what I would run I'm sure you may run 37's or something...

I am running 37 and stock disc brakes in front and rear. The 17" rims should solve your clearance issue. MRW wheel will build any back spacing you want and they are only a little higher than procomps. For your truck I would say a 3-3.25 inch back spacing.

Roger

are these the guys you are talking about...MRW ? http://www.mrt-wheels.com/

Looks like a good option.... What I know on the 15 inch rockcrawler wheels I have now...they are 15*8 and 3.5 bs and while I think the back space is ok...the design of the wheel at the center is the issue.. the way in which the wheel is designed interferes with the way in which it clears the caliper.

I might need some in person advice one day before I order anything to make sure I get what will work. I would love to throw the wheel spacers in the garbage or donate to someone else.

Maybe if we ever have a work party or whatever I'll tow my junk up and we can talk about it, take the front wheel off and the spacer and check it out. IF not for the wheel design I think I would be good on the wheel space thing but its always good to get some good advice.

Right now I have 33*12.50*15 BFG KO MT on rockcrawler 15*8 wheels with 3.5 BS and I run a 1.5 inch wheel spacer to clear the front caliper (not required to be that thick..but at the time I bought the spacers it was the only size around with the built in studs). I also run the spacers on the back axle (though not required...but just to space the tires out even front to back, not that really matters a whole lot).

I want to go to a 35 inch tire, probally on 17*8 wheels (I assume they make those type wheels...I see the site above does)...
