I am planning to go visit some folks in Alamosa CO and wondering what kind of wheeling places are there. I am not talking about hardcore stuff since there will be only one truck wheeling. Just nice back road/scenary stuff...I have heard about the great sand dunes...how hard or easy to go there and wheel..is it normally very crowded place(in case I get stuck)...would love to do some dune driving if it allows

Any ideas will be appriciated..

The Sand Dunes are fun. However, they don't let you drive on the actual dunes. You can climb them and snowboard/sled down! They are 700-800 feet tall. The trail is Medano Pass. It has a mix of dirt, shallow and deep sand, a bunch of water crossings, etc. Very fun, fairly mild trail. There are some narrow sections with overhanging brush where you may pick up a few scratches. We go every year. Great primitive back country camping along the trail as well. You shouldn't get stuck, even in a stock Cruiser if you take your time in some of the deep sections. Usually enough traffic just in case, but not so many people that it gets annoying.

Thanks pint......I did a google search for Medano pass and got a ton of info..looks like fun

I am not worried about few scraches..got plenty of them from wheeling trips like this one in Brazos Vally,TX.....

I just went in June. It was the best week the kids have had"4,5,6,and 11". We drove up and stopped in Carlsbad Caverns, then Roswell. We camped up the pass. Right in a valley on the stream with 3 beaver dams right next to us. We were right before the old cabin ruins. The trails are not bad at all and the hiking was great. It did get down in the 30's at night, but it was beautiful. We are looking for a place closer to us in Houston but have not had much luck. Its a great trip.

yeah...we Texans can't find a closer place :o))

I am going to drive straight up to Alamosa ...it's about 900 miles from Houston.

I am not going to camp out this time since we have a house to stay...We will be doing just day trips to here and there....can't wait
