Sounds like a good thread: Winter Preps. Enuf reason to make it local? Or should we refer folks to the general forum and search function?...

search for that here on our section. there is a list that comes out nearly each year in one of our threads.

I ask b/c I almost moved my kit outta my rig a few days ago: thought I needed the room for other stuff. Turns out I didn't, and, in hindsight, I'm glad.

Any thoughts? Ayes/Nays? Don't hafta be me starting the thread.

Jon already said stickies were getting out of hand. The other side of that, we live in NM, who knows what would be neccesary from day to day. Everyone should know what some of the basic survival needs before they head out. It can be found on many web sites already.

You've made anyone who's been in the military in the last 20 years chuckle. MRE = Meals Ready to Eat, basically your K and C rations for the modern world. I "almost" always have them in an ammo box secured in the back of the 60, but was using the truck to haul some stuff and never put it back in before I lost easy access to my storage. My "real" first aid kit is in there as well as jumper cables.

What can I say, I was a Boy Scout: Be Prepared

That is why I said nevermind. I was thinking equipment for the rigs. When typing, I didn't think about food. My brother used to get dropped off for a 7 day hike with only 7 MRE's to hike back to the Air Force Academy. Besides, I have a few friends that were in the Scouts, they don't know s*** about survival. Not saying that you don't , but I do fine.

I hear ya both, just putting it out there. Figure most here know the preps, but outside (Chi-town to FL) visitors might not know that here in NM we can be in shirtsleeves at 11am and need full wintergear by 4pm. In March. Or while riding the Tram to 10k.

the difference between "should know" and "do use" is what keeps some of us employed. Hijack over.

chances are low that we would get that far over our heads with near stock vehicles. as Greg said, it's just a "being prepared" thing. when you guys start getting stuck, I "should" be able to maneuver pretty well still in the FJ40. with chains on those 40" Iroks, I can get through some major snow.
I don't want to pick a trail that is too hard for us to have fun. I was thinking west side Jemez where snow is lesser.

I haven't seen what your 40 can do yet! Are you bragging?:flipoff2: Wow, a 40 on 40's. Who would of thunk it.

Either way I should be in. Just not sure if I can get the others to take a snow run for thier first trip.

Actually, the east side was reporting less snow than the west side. And when we started out at Paliza (probably ~7,000 ft) there was about 6". If you took the same approximate route we did today but you stayed on FS 10, it'd probably be easy going until you got to a depth of snow they were no longer comfortable with. Andrew's memory and the map both indicate FS10 is being a maintaned road. It goes north from Paliza and parallels Paliza canyon but to the west, and eventually connects to HWY 4 just east of Jemez Falls.

that's what I meant. I said West and was thinking East.

Anyway's, what is the run for Sunday? You are talking to the other guys on there way here. What do they want to do?

here's the pics and video from a year ago when I had just put on the 40's. Post#2.
08 snow run:flipoff2: back at ya.:D

Art is willing to follow our lead since he doesn't know the area(poor sap doesn't know what he's getting into). we can go up Paliza a little to see where today's run went, then run up the road past the Paliza trail head turn off. that gives us a little view in the close trees and also an easier bigger road to get farther. any other suggestions?

You all won’t believe this but I just realized today, after a couple of phone calls, that there was more than one page to this thread! I never saw the button at the bottom of the page that it was “page 1 of 2” (now up to 3). I thought the reason I didn’t see any posts after Dec. 26 was just that everyone was preoccupied with the holidays.

I see that I was wrong and you’ve been planning a great adventure for us after we arrive at Shawn's on Saturday evening. Even though I was blindly out of touch for so long, I am deeply grateful for so many of you continuing the conversation and planning for us. As I said, I’ve talked to a few of you on the phone. Now I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can on Jan. 3 and maybe also the 4th.

Several of the earlier posts have mentioned winter preparedness. I think we have all the named items EXCEPT chains, with which I have no experience. Should we try to pick up a set on the way to Albuquerque? I don't even know if a set is two or four. We have an air locker in the rear and the stock open differential in front if that makes a difference.

Peace to all, and may we each contribute to making our little parts of the world better in the just-begun New Year.

I'll let those going edjumacate you on need for chains. A set is 2, one for each drive wheel. The fun comes in deciding which drive wheel to put them on, thus your logic in wondering if a set would be 4.

Seems like somebody'd have a set for you, and if not, might buy'em off ya after the run if you don't think you'll need 'em again. Post up what size tires you're running and let's see if we can help you out.

Ummmm.... you do know that I was on that run right? Or did you forget because you were able to plow the snow for the group and leave the rest of us behind (Ash ran the front for a while, but when it got deeper you moved up front from tail gun)? I thought you would have cought the sarcasim in that post. I believe that was the Christmas Tree run right? Oh wait, you were too far ahead when I high centered, following Sarah. Jon had to winch me off with Greg as an anchor. So anyways, so you still want to tell me what your 40 can do?

I guess that depends on what tires you're already running and just how far you want to get. On the club run yesterday, about 1/3 of the trucks were using chains. All of them had one set (enough for two wheels) on the rear wheels.

Chains make it so you can get farther into the deep stuff than you could without them. But we still did quite well without them on most of our trucks yesterday. As long as it doesn't snow any more between now and Sunday, I think you'll be just fine. But if you post what size tires you're running, somebody in the club might be willing to loan you a set if you would prefer to have them.

FWIW, I was driving a '99 100 with 33" BFG A/Ts and no chains and I did fine following guys with bigger tires and chains that stomped it down for me.

umm, no I forgot. it didn't help that I couldn't see the pics on my work computer or i'd have caught it (photobucket is blocked). i see/hear your sarcasm now.:D

Art's tires are 31's.

I saw some chains at Wal-Mart a couple weeks ago for $60. I have no idea if they are any good.

I might as well p/u another set (Budget dependent ). It really doesn't matter what kind they are, I run 245's, so they should fit the 31's too.

Don't assume anything; the package will say what tire sizes the chains will fit. Having chains that are too long or too short is foolish when you're snow wheeling. It's not worth damaging your vehicle out on the trail because a chain came apart and destroyed important bits in the process.

So what is the head count of who is going?

big ol' bummer.

So what is the head count of who is going?

i have to bow out... life is getting in the way :crybaby:

you guys have a great time, i wish i could make it... :steer::cheers:
