So I was looking around for different areas that might be fun to play in (besides McGrew), and was wondering if anyone had any experience with any of these.

Timber Mountain OHV

John's Peak OHV Area

Klamath Sportsman's Park

Prospect OHV Trail System
Prospet OHV Trail System

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Siuslaw National Forest - Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Noonday Trail

Shotgun Creek Trail

Anyone have any experience with these? On a related note, anyone wanna go explore 'em? :hmm:

I haven't. Maybe would should plan some exploring runs :)

I did pickup a OHV permit. Cheap. $10.50 for 2yrs. All the money goes direct back to them from what I understand.

That's the idea. ;)

Prospect isn't far either. We could hit that up in the evening even.

Did the noonday trail two weeks before Mcgrew. Not hard at all, McGrew is much more technical. It is very narrow and climbs from about 1000 ft to 5000 ft within 4-5 miles. So it's all uphill. Then the trail crosses back and forth over a service road. I would guess it takes about 4-5 hours to complete, that is with some side trips to explore other trails. Eventually you end up at a saddle up at Fairview fire lookout.

Ammo and TBlume did Shotgun creek a few weeks back. Again it is a rather short trail but I think there are quite a few more areas to really flex your truck and play around. Winter time it will get really muddy there. Let us Eugene folk know if you're coming up and we will join you!

You could also do a combo weekend run and hit Noonday the first day, camp and then hit Shotgun Creek the next?

Great info to know!

That was my thought. This month is pretty much shot for me, but next month is pretty open so far...

Howdy Yotatom- I live in Bend, and may be around/available Labor Day weekend if you're looking for somebody to wheel with. The East Fort Rock OHV area is cool, especially if you bring dirtbikes. Most of the trails are for dirtbikes. There are plenty of gravel and forest roads to explore in the area also. East of the area are some fun hill climbs and wide open areas for exploring. Mellow wheelin' mostly. There is also the Ground Hog Play Area which has serious rock crawling lines. Take a drive up Pine Mountain, the trail is fun (mellow) and has great views.

There are also lots of decent forest service roads West of town in the Cascades. A great scenic drive is heading up from town to the Broken Top trailhead on double track. A popular area to wheel that is challenging, is the Edison Trail System near Mt. Bachelor. Lemme know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to share info with you or anybody else for that matter.

Lucy, Thanks for the info.
My wife and I plan to arrive in La Pine Thusday night then explore the Fort Rock area for some fun 4wheeling starting at the south end and moving northward toward the Badlands research area. My 4runner is basicaly stock except for a 4 inch lift, 33 inch tires, regeared with 488's and a ARB bumper with winch. I don't have the articulation to do any serious rock crawling but have been over some pretty rough terrain. I really like steep hills so I may consider that area east of Fort Rock that you mentioned. will probably camp near there Friday night then head for the Edison Trail on Saturday. Sunday, we are going to a small family reunion in Crooked River north of Redmond. Monday is up in the air depending on what we discover Friday and Saturday. Have been driving 4X4's for 13 years though a lot of that you might call "mellow", I am wondering how to change the "rookie" status IH8mud has given me. You may also contact me at assembly@nwtec.com. Hope to 4Wheel together.

Lucy, (This is a dupe' because I thought I failed to send it)

I'm just about to wrap up some maintenance/repairs on my Cruiser. Would like to get it out some time next weekend. Let's stay in touch. May be up for running Edison next Saturday, I missed our local club's run up Edison yesterday. If you'd like some solitude, I understand also. Monday, probably works also. We might be able to rally a couple other Cruiserheads for a drive here or there, if you're interested. If you'd just like some info, please ask!

I'm running 33's and a 4" lift, stock gearing, nothing special. Edison is fun and demands your attention at times. Some more challenging lines as well. I dig cruising and exploring also. A great drive starts from Westside of Bend and winds up at the Broken Top trailhead. Scenic and mellow. Edge of the wilderness and immersed in nature. :)

Feel free to get in touch with me here through Mud. I'm on it all the time...

Cheers, Carlos

Carlos,
Sorry for calling you Lucy. Saturday sounds good if not too early. we will be camping Friday night somewhere around Fort Rock. Will need a place to meet Saturday morning. Don't know Bend very well. On Saturday maybe we can come up with a plan for Monday.

No problem Tom! :)

It doesn't sound like there is much interest from the folks I talked to about running Edison on Saturday, since they ran it just last weekend. Might have a couple folks interested in a mellow wheeling/exploring trip up towards Broken Top or out East. I'll provide a link below to the thread about our plans for this weekend. I also just slapped my rig back together so I think I want to keep Saturday mellow. :)

Monday I may be heading up to Quake Attack with the club. I won't be driving my rig on this trail, for now. Check out that same link below for more info about that as well.

Have a good time on Saturday. We wiil be going solo to the Edison Trail unless we can hook up with someone there. Thanks for all the info. Maybe we will meet at another event. We will be tuned to channel 15 on our CB if you somehow wind up in the same area.

Sounds good Tom. If I get my crap together and noone else joins us for a mellow cruise, I may rally up to Edison to wheel with you. Channel 15, got it. Any idea what time you might be starting at Edison? Just curious...

No problemo! Hope you had a blast. I ended up driving up to the Broken Top trailhead on Saturday. Mellow day by myself actually. Lots of folks on the trail/roads though.

Cheers, Carlos.

The OHV area at Fort Rock is almost entirely atv and dirt bike trails. Drove to the top of China hat. long drive for nothing. No view because of the trees. Drove up nat. forest road 18 to Sabol Butte cinder pit and found a play area for atvs and had some fun hill climbing. The Fort Rock area is so huge that it would help to go with someone who knew the area. On our way to Pine Mtn,(something else we wanted to check out) we saw a sign about Ground Hog Butte rock crawling trail but did not check it out. Will try googling. Pine Mtn has an observatory at the top. Nice drive from the north but slow and bumpy from the south.
Next day was spent exploring west of Bend south side of hwy 46 and east of forest service road 45. A lot of unimproved service roads criss crossing the whole area with a few interesting spur roads. the most fun was following the power lines. went from mellow to a couple of technical spots. Heard that on the northern side of the newberry Volcanic Monument there is some good hills and a little more tech stuff but didn't have time to check it out.
Didn't find as many technical stuff but enjoyed exploring. So many Roads, so little time!
