Hey all... long time reader, first time poster. ;)

I'm the proud new owner of a 86' FJ60, Beige, 132K, Arizona truck.. very clean.

Anyways, the first mods the truck will get is the OME 3" Lift treatment... and new tires and wheels.

I'm going for the split rim look by ordering the same deminsion steel wheel from Stockton's... 16"x5.5" Steelies. I've read Stockton's takes forever to get the wheels done... but I have two questions with that wheel size in mind.

1. What backspacing do I need? 3.5"??
2. I'm looking at 255/85r16 BFG MT tires... which I believe equates to 33.3x10. Will those fit ok on a 16"x5.5" rim? BFG recommends a little wider. The only other BFG option I see in a narrow 33" tire is the 33x9.5 ATs but I'm really wanting something more rugged.

Anywho, I'm going for the foreign cruiser / NATO look that I know some of you have done. Pizza cutter / Narrow tires with steel "split rim" looking wheels.

Thoughts?

Stockton will make them any size you want. I would do 16x7 so then if you want to run a bigger tire (285/75) later you can do so and not be an issue.

Back space I would do 3" then it would sit perfect in wheel well.

Thanks Bomar... if I get the 16x7 rim, will it still give the look of a tall skinny tire? I've read that a narrower rim helps the pizza cutter look... Just love the look of the stock splits on the foreign cruisers... 16x5.5 but I wanna make sure the 33x10's will fit ok before I order them.

Has anyone here done this?

I did not think Stockton makes 16x5.5" rims, only 16x6". At least that is what they told me when I called them.

I think 255/85/16 may need a little wider wheel, maybe like 6-6.5". But I definitely do not know for sure. The narrower rim the better (to a certain point) for airing down and offroad use. I think if you want to run a narrow tire like 10" wide or less, a 5.5" rim or 6" rim would be great. I do not know this from experience, only the little that I've read, so keep that in mind.

But, for example, you do not want to run a skinny tire like 7.5r16 on a 7 or 8 inch wide rim, the bead would unseat too easily when aired down.

I also like skinny tires and simple rims. I bought a set of OEM split rims and planning on running 235/85/16's on them
which I think are a narrower and smaller than the 255's. Eventually, I'm going to have them modified into non splits.. ie get a new outer rim welded on.

From what I've read in the 40 series section, 33x10.5 are the limit for the 15x5.5" rims that came on the 40's. Even then, some say the 33x10.5 is too wide for the rim. But others say they have no problems. Something to keep in mind.

Here is a good link to determine proper tire/wheel size. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Edit: looks like I was wrong, that site recommends a wheel size from 6.5" to 8" for a 255/85/16
