I have a 1980 FJ40 that has a 2" lift. Current wheels are 17x8 0 offset, and tires are 285/70 KM2's.

If I turn the wheel completely, I get scrubbing on the treads, right at 2" in from the side of the tire, making just shy of 1/8" deep bite into the tread from the leaf spring shackle. I haven't noticed it hitting any tie rods, so that SEEMS to be okay.

It's been suggested that I get some 1.25" spacers, but reading comments and hearing horror stories about wheels coming off - I'd honestly rather just spend some money and get proper fitting wheels and tires and be done with it. I don't want my truck to be any more dangerous than it already is.

My first impulse was going down to a 16x8, with a 265/75 tire (and possibly something with some negative offset). That alone would drop my tire about half an inch away from the shackle and should give me clearance. I'm not wild about the idea of going smaller - if I could get a wheel/tire combo in 17's with a decent offset and fix the issue that would be great. I don't go wheeling (yet) but if I could cram something taller / wider under there without doing surgery on the body that would be an option as well.

Bottom line, I want it to stay as chunky as I can keep it without doing modifications if I can help it, and without spacers. What do you guys suggest and/or what are your specific wheel/tire combos that you run?

I can post pictures if it would help.
